Faculty Forum 2 | Dr. Áine Phillips & Dr. Ruby Wallis | Wednesday 30 September @ 11am

✨ Please join us for this week’s Wednesday Session with our very own faculty, Dr. Áine Phillips and Dr. Ruby Wallis.

Dr. Áine Phillips is an artist based in Galway whose practice spans live performance, installation, video and socially engaged practice. For over 35 years, her work has addressed women’s lived experience and autobiographical histories, feminism, community and social justice, particularly the histories of incarceration of women in Magdalen Laundries, Mother and Baby Homes and Industrial Schools in Ireland.

Dr. Ruby Wallis works across photography and visual art and has exhibited widely in Ireland and internationally. Recent exhibitions include Whistling in the Dark at Galway Arts Centre, This Rural at Lismore Castle Arts and Bones in the Attic at The Hugh Lane Gallery. In 2022, she published the photobook A Woman Walks Alone at Night, with a Camera, and her work has also appeared in The New Yorker, The British Journal of Photography and Winter Papers.

Photoworks Annual 33: Cosmophotographies

Launching in October, Cosmophotographies takes Yuk Hui’s conception of cosmotechnics, and applies it to photography. Hui argues that technology is never neutral, embodying the values, assumptions and ways of knowing which shaped it – while simultaneously shaping them. Cosmophotographies asks what ideology is embedded in the camera and the images it produces; in the face of impending environmental and climate breakdown, can we urgently envisage something else?

In our undergrad group show, I displayed this cyanotype triptych titled “Contemplating Water”. This piece was originally for my “Walking as an Art Practice” class, where we learned that walking and wandering can be research methods in creating art. This piece was based off a walk I had to the pier in town where I sat at the edge and stared at the wind as it blew across the surface of the water. I thought it was quite beautiful and the more I watched it the more I came up with stories in my head. So I wrote a poem about it, created an illustrated border, and experimented with the water heavy technique of cyanotype to create this piece. Num momento em que fazer cultura é cada vez mais desafiador, é emocionante ver tanta gente reunida, especialmente tantas mulheres, dispostas a tensionar os limites da arte contemporânea, dialogar com o presente e provocar novos olhares.
Muito feliz por fazer parte dessa coletividade potente que insiste, acredita e luta 💥

Last weekend’s opening of (UN)EARTHED: through air, tied to each other.

Across installation, print, sculpture, and moving image, the exhibition traces entanglement in a world that refuses stillness.

Part of Burren College of Art’s end-of-year exhibitions, with work unfolding across the gallery, studios, and Barn.

Thank you to everyone who came through, stayed, listened, and looked closely.

Engage Art Studios is delighted to be participating in SUPERMARKET – Stockholm Independent Art Fair this year! This year, the festival turns its attention to Ireland, viewed not only as a country, but as an island in its entirety. The work of Ellen Blair, Dónal Talbot, Clodagh O’Leary and Ruby Wallis allows to transcend political borders and explore insularity, a sense of belonging and the plurality of identities: themes dear to Circulation(s).
