POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Hello to new friends and followers!

I’m Ruchita, an artist, designer and writer based in Mumbai. I been interested in art since I was 8 years old and arrived at my own practice through design, a profession I have pursued for more than 20 years now. Before I established my design studio, I worked in corporate design, in a museum and in the theatre. I realised I wanted to design for culture, and that has been the story of Kahani, a design studio I run with my husband @aditya_palsule

The great gift of this path is that my education in the visual arts has come from working with museums, galleries, foundations, biennales and even with artists themselves. It has been an absolute privilege to enjoy art for a living – one that I can safely say is only second to actually making it.

When I became a mother I realised that I could only give my child the courage to “be anything in the world”, if I had some of that same courage myself. And that really has been the motivation for pursuing a serious art practice since 2021. It’s the thought that gets me to the studio in the odd hours and on holidays.

What you see here on Instagram might be gone in a few seconds. But if I’m honest with you, it has been a lifetime in the making. I could not have made this work at 20. Or at 30.

If something I share resonates with you, please reach out. I’m happy to make a new connection or start a new story. taken in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India by @ruchitamadhok

I’m a little late to the #worldcyanotypeday party, but I made something and wanted to share it anyway.

I’m beginning to see possibilities emerge from these collages. They appear to be portals — thresholds between time and space.

Trying not to overthink when I make a collage but sometimes it just takes the time it takes to balance out.

A collage a day for October. Thinking of calling these ‘Cosmic Collations’. What you guys think is a good name?

October has rolled around quicker than I thought it would, and I find myself stuck. I have so many ideas germinating in my head but everything is taking its own time.

So while seeds take root, I’m committing to a small practice every day this month. I’m going to make one collage from old prints, misprints and scraps in the studio. Let’s see if this opens up new directions for me.

Here’s to collage-tober?

If you’re participating in inktober drop me a comment and I’ll follow along for your journey too. taken in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India by @ruchitamadhok

It’s World Cyanotype Day today and this is the first cyanotype I ever made in 2010. Back when I was working at the V&A in London, I volunteered to help with an artist’s workshop. At the end of the session she let me make one of my own. I was smitten for life!

It was not easy to learn the process properly. Back then the alt photo community was tiny and I had to scrounge around for every small bit of info. Now look at how far I’ve come!

As a gesture of thanks to all the incredible people and resources that helped me along the way, I want to share my list with you today.

*YOU’LL WANT TO SAVE THIS POST!*

‘Albatross’ is a cyanotype work I created in 2024 for @ipepindia International Print Exchange. The work was a response to the curatorial provocation of Imprinting Justice.

The ask was not a small one - I had to create an edition of 44 prints in the most challenging of monsoon seasons - something any alt process artist will tell you is extraordinarily tough to do.

Despite that challenge, Albatross did go into the world (thanks for the nudge @nikhil.faandee) and I’m really heartened to see that this work has resonated with so many people around the world. I’ve had emails from folks in the US, Brazil and Europe sharing their experience of seeing it in person.

It will open as part of the @photoplacegallery online exhibit titled “CYANOTYPE: Process and Possibility” in Vermont, USA next month.

Before I share the thought behind the work, here’s a look at my drawing process. It’s unconventional by most alternative photo standards but it combines many kinds of skills I’ve learned over the years

After a lot of trial and error I was able to create a plate that would reproduce over 44 editions, with minimal variation.

The colouring, textures and details were all rendered in @procreate

The original drawing was developed in ink. by @ruchitamadhok

If you know me and my penchant for snail mail, then you’ll know how I could not resist participating in @the.curators open call for an exhibition on postcards.

I was sketching up ideas for the pieces, when my son’s doodles on my drawing board conjured up new sci-fi stories in my head. Titled “Devi’s Spaceship”, a new series of small cyanotype works was born.

Two of these postcards survived the mail trip to Paris and are now part of the exhibition ‘Correspondances’.

Mes amis à Paris, je vous invite à l’exposition to see the wonderful whirlwind of post that arrived from all over the world! It looks amazing and I wish I could see it all in person!

Exhibition now open at The Curators Gallery
Address: 20 rue de Mesay, 75003 Paris
From 8th August through till the end of the month

P.S. send me a photo if you find my pieces! I’ve marked them up on the photos :)

Also — three cheers for @indiapost_news taken in Paris, France by @ruchitamadhok
