What if light were more than something we see?

Mumbai-based visual artist Ruchita Madhok (@ruchitamadhok) explores light as both a physical phenomenon and a form of memory, drawing connections between photography, painting, printmaking, science and philosophy.

🔹 Working with the historical photographic process of cyanotype, she uses sunlight to create works in which blue fields, geometric forms and mica paint evoke planets, atoms and the larger structures of the universe.

🔹 Her practice brings together astronomy, cosmology, science fiction and ancient Indian philosophical texts, including the Upanishads and Yogasutras.

🔹 With light as both her material and subject, Ruchita invites us to question how we see, interpret and remember the world around us.

This contemporary artwork draws from Manikarnika Ghat, using thick, broken layers of Yellow Ochre to evoke the weathered texture of ancient stone.

There is more to a map than meet the eye.

For Episode 30 of Avid Library, we revisit a fascinating conversation on how maps have traced Mumbai’s transformation, from early Portuguese and British surveys to the interactive maps we use today.

But this discussion looks beyond maps as tools of navigation. It explores them as art, memory, identity and storytelling.

Still overwhelmed after Sunday's Secret Surprise Birthday celebrations planned by my Amazzzing Tribe...
Whatsapp planning , Zoom calls.. still don't know what else 😅 but I know they were having a ball of a time doing this as a team ( without me still trying to micro manage..but got kicked out 😋)
After teaching a 3 Hour Non Stop Zumba Class .. it took a small moment for my brain to process this cute flashmob happening with the sweetest song lyrics dedicated to me
Thankyou guys .. what a fun-tastic week it's been... I love you all ..with all my heart 🙏🏻❤️💋

Tanya
She makes you feel alive
She makes you want some more
She's the one & only genius
She's always on the go
Yeah Tanya let's move it
Yeah Tanya let's shake it
When it's Tanya
We just ....wanna wanna wanna
She's sassy she's kind
She's ready with a smile
She makes the world spin
She's our forever dopamine
Yeah Tanya let's move it
Yeah Tanya let's shake it
When it's Tanya
We just..wanna wanna wanna

Meet featured RADARTist @ruchitamadhok ✨

RAD: What opportunities mattered early on and what didn’t, even though they looked important?

Ruchita:

Meeting artists, talking to them, and learning by looking deeply at their work over a period of years has had a profound impact on my practice.

I never turn down the chance to visit a studio or meet someone in person. By contrast, the unpaid, but awesome-sounding opportunities that did not value my work have been poor investments, and I’ve learned to turn them down now.

ABOUT RUCHITA:

Ruchita Madhok is a visual artist playing with the phenomenon of light.

Through historical photographic techniques, she delves into the ways in which we perceive light – in eyes, mind, body and spirit, and the ways in which we remember light – as images, mythology, language and experience. She uses drawings, photographs and a variety of materials to record impressions made by light on paper, fabric and stone. Her works invite viewers to stillness and contemplation, encouraging personal readings into the symbolisms and abstractions at play.

Madhok’s recent cyanotypes are informed by ancient Indian conceptions of cosmic light. These consider light as a force integral to the formation of the universe, as well as our experience of it. The works draw on archetypes and geometries described in sacred and philosophical texts.

Madhok received an MA in Scenography from University of the Arts London and a BDes from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. She is an award-winning designer with over 15 years of experience in the creative and cultural sector.

Ruchita lives and works in Mumbai, India.
