Dog training is an evolving world and as I recently read on the Positively socials, “𝐄𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐤𝐚𝐲 𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐝𝐬, 𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭. 𝐖𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭.” (post continued on my Facebook page)

I think watching your pups grow from tiny sponges to their true selves will always be therapeutic for me 🫶

What looks like “just a cute trick” is actually months of training, shaping and reinforcement layered together. 🐾 Teaching this trick has reinforced my training bond with this dog like nothing else 🧡🧡🧡

This didn’t start with me standing up and asking her to jump through my arms. We built it one tiny piece at a time.

🔸 Capturing & luring — starting on the floor, using food placement to help her discover the movement and marking the behaviours I wanted.

🔸 Shaping — gradually changing the criteria and my arm position, reinforcing each approximation rather than expecting the finished behaviour.

🔸 Adding a verbal cue — pairing my words with the behaviour once she understood what I was asking.

🔸 Changing the picture — moving from an easy floor position to an over-the-arm jump, then introducing another arm and building a half circle.

🔸 Increasing the criteria — progressing from a half circle to a full circle while gradually removing the lure.

🔸 Fading the prompt — she no longer needs to follow my food hand. She’s now responding to my eye contact, body language and verbal cue.

Every little success has been marked and reinforced, criteria has been increased gradually, and we’ve gone back a step when she needed more clarity.

The next layer?

Me standing up and asking her to jump through my arms from the ground up.

And yes… that will probably take more time too! 😂

This is why consistency matters.

Training isn’t usually about teaching something once and suddenly having the finished behaviour. It’s about breaking it down, reinforcing the tiny wins, building fluency, fading prompts and gradually raising the criteria.

So when your dog can’t do the thing yet, don’t write them off.

They might just need more guidance from you 🫶

We all know how much a little reward can motivate a dog… well, it turns out humans work the same way! 😂
Every lovely review I receive is a bit like me getting my own treat for a job well done. 🥹
They genuinely make me happy, give me a little boost to keep turning up and doing my best, and remind me why I love what I do so much.
So thank you to everyone who takes the time to leave a review. ❤️
It’s really nice to be rewarded too! 🐾
