Ending the semester with our own version of Storm II 🌪️😂

A semester full of weird improv tasks, unexpected exercises and moments of “WHY are we doing this?” 😭

You survived the chaos.
You survived me. 😂

Proud of you, my beginners. 🤍

The first semester with you is over. And honestly, I’m finding it a little hard to put everything I feel into words.

I came to this group as your teacher, but somewhere along the way, you became much more than just students to me.

I saw you doubt yourselves, feel shy, be afraid to make mistakes, and sometimes not know what to do. And then, little by little, I saw you let go. You started trying, experimenting, laughing at your mistakes, becoming braver and, most importantly, becoming more yourselves.

And that is what means the most to me.

Thank you for letting me be a part of this process. For every “I don’t know if I can do it” followed by you trying anyway. For your crazy ideas, your laughter, your chaos, your seriousness, your quiet moments, and all those moments when the whole room came alive.

I was learning with you too — how to explain better, how to listen, how to see each person individually. And maybe you don’t even realize how much I’m taking from this semester with me.

I’m proud of you. Not because you became “perfect” or learned to do everything right. But because you allowed yourselves to be in the process.

Thank you for being my first group this semester.
Thank you for the people you are and for the atmosphere we created together.

This was only the first semester.
But I’m already so curious to see where each of you goes next. 🤍

Thank you for being you. taken in Yalla Dance Studio by @rukh.lab.eg

Some moments are not really about what we do, but about the people we share them with.

Different personalities, different stories, different energy — but somehow, together, it feels right.

No perfect poses. No pretending. Just real people, real moments, laughter, chaos and a little bit of magic.

Grateful for this atmosphere and for the people who make it what it is. 🖤 taken in Yalla Dance Studio by @rukh.lab.eg

PROFESSIONAL STUDENT

This one is often misunderstood.

A professional student is not someone who always does everything correctly.

It is someone who knows how to learn.

They:
— listen instead of just waiting for their turn
— ask questions
— are willing to look bad while learning something new
— don’t expect the teacher to constantly motivate them
— practice outside the class
— understand that progress doesn’t always look like progress
— don’t compare their process to someone else’s
— understand the difference between “I can’t do it yet” and “I can’t do it.”

And:

Professional student ≠ obedient student.

You can disagree with your teacher, ask uncomfortable questions and still be an incredibly professional student. taken in Yalla Dance Studio by @rukh.lab.eg

🪞 MIRROR — Upper ↔ Lower

A simple improvisation exercise with a twist.

Two dancers: Leader & Follower.

1. Upper → Lower
The Leader moves only with the upper body.
The Follower responds only with the lower body.

2. Lower → Upper
Switch it.
The Leader moves with the lower body, while the Follower translates the movement into the upper body.

The rule is simple: don’t copy the movement — translate it.

If the Leader makes a spiral with the chest, the Follower can create a spiral through the hips.

If the Leader pushes with the arms, the Follower can answer with a push through the legs.

The goal is to notice the quality, direction, dynamics and intention of the movement and find its equivalent in another part of the body.

👀 See the movement.
🧠 Understand the movement.
🫀 Translate the movement.

A different way to listen to your partner — without saying a word. taken in Yalla Dance Studio by @rukh.lab.eg

When one body becomes the material for another.

In this contemporary improvisation practice, two dancers work together: one leads, the other follows.

The leader creates different shapes and pathways with the follower’s body, building the dance movement by movement.

But the most important part is not simply what movement comes next. It’s how the signal is given.

The leader has to notice:
— when the follower is ready for the next action
— how their weight is shifting
— whether the previous movement is complete
— when to wait instead of rushing
— how clearly the body communicates the next intention

It becomes a conversation without words.

The follower learns to listen with the whole body.
The leader learns to guide without forcing.

And together, they create something that neither of them could create alone. 🤍

I don’t know if it makes sense to write anything here, or if you are able to see and feel everything yourself

1. 🟢 They don’t say “do it like me” — they teach you to find your own movement instead of copying theirs.
2. 🟢 They let you make mistakes — because in improvisation, “wrong” can often become the most interesting choice.
3. 🟢 They don’t correct every movement — they understand when you need a technical correction and when you simply need space to find your own way of moving.
4. 🟢 They create a safe environment — where you’re not afraid to look weird, funny, awkward, or simply “not dancey.”
5. 🟢 They know how to explain abstract ideas — instead of just saying “feel your body,” they give you a specific task that helps you actually experience it.
6. 🟢 They notice small progress — like the first time you held a pause, made an unexpected choice, or stopped controlling every single movement.
7. 🟢 They teach you to use limitations — because “only one body part,” “only move slowly,” or “don’t repeat a movement” can open up so many new possibilities.
8. 🟢 They don’t confuse freedom with chaos — they give you a structure within which you can actually be free. taken in Yalla Dance Studio by @rukh.lab.eg

You might be wondering why I’m smiling like that — especially to music that isn’t even happy 😅

Well… my student stepped into the improvisation circle for the very first time.

I remember very well how scary that can be. I know it from my own experience — about 5 years ago.

I always give my students freedom in this moment. If you’re scared, feeling overwhelmed, or simply not ready yet — I’m ready to wait. There is no “you have to do it now.”

All the other students had already stepped into the circle during previous classes. For her, it was the first time.

And the first time really is scary.

It’s unfamiliar. Everyone is watching you. It’s not like during a regular class, when everyone is dancing, trying, making mistakes and improvising together — and you feel like you’re all on the same level.

Here, you can feel a completely different kind of pressure.

That’s why I gave her time. Time to get used to it, to try, and to feel comfortable in that space.

And at some point, I felt that I wanted to support her and encourage her to take that step.

And her movement changed immediately.

New shapes appeared. More freedom. More interaction with the other dancer — which, by the way, is even harder when you don’t have much experience with it yet.

I’m incredibly proud of her. And I’m so grateful that she trusted herself enough to do it. 🫶

And my other students… they are always little sunshine people ☀️

Everyone is so different. And each of them is already developing their own “signature” in improvisation.

And honestly, this is one of my favorite things to watch during every class. 🤍 taken in Yalla Dance Studio by @rukh.lab.eg
