🌸 A small Navarathri thought…

For the past few years, I’ve stopped giving manjal–kumkum packets as part of my Navarathri thamboolam.

Instead, I give kumkum and sandhanam directly, along with a fruit, neivedhyam/prasadam and a return gift, if I choose to give one. ❤️

Why? I’ve noticed that these packets are often kept away and eventually passed on from one person to another — sometimes without even knowing how long they’ve been sitting there or whether the quality is still good. And along with it comes unnecessary plastic packaging and spending.

I feel the same about blouse pieces. Traditionally, they were useful because they would be stitched into blouses. These days, many of us don’t necessarily use them that way. I do use a few for lining or puja purposes, but I still have quite a few sitting unused.

So personally, I feel that giving something genuinely useful is a better choice.

Of course, if there are elders in the family or guests who genuinely use blouse pieces or manjal–kumkum packets, absolutely continue — they can be meaningful and useful for them. ❤️

This thought is mainly for our generation and the younger generation, where some of these things may simply keep getting passed around without being used.

What do you do for your Golu thamboolam? 😊

If you still feel these are an important part of your tradition, please continue doing what feels right for you. 🌺
No judgement at all — just sharing what I’ve personally chosen to do to keep the tradition meaningful while avoiding unnecessary waste.♻️

Share if your thoughts are the same🤝

Try this easy and tasty sweet for this festive season 🤎

🥣 Godhumai Payasam

Ingredients: ( Our ratio is For 1 cup Godhumai 2 cups of Jaggery if u r ok with sweet)

* Broken wheat / godhumai (slightly bigger granules)
* Jaggery
* Coconut milk
* Cashews
* Raisins
* Ghee

Method:

1. Pressure cook the broken wheat/godhumai with water for 1–2 whistles, until soft and cooked.
2. Alternatively, you can cook the godhumai directly in a pan with water until it becomes soft.
3. In a separate pan, add jaggery and a little water. Let it cook until the jaggery syrup thickens slightly. Avoid adding too much water.
4. Add the cooked godhumai to the jaggery syrup and mix well.
5. Cook for a few minutes until the mixture thickens slightly.
6. Add coconut milk, mix well and switch off the flame.
7. Roast cashews and raisins in ghee and garnish the payasam.

🥥 Fresh coconut milk tip:

* If using fresh coconut milk, use the 2nd extract to cook the godhumai.
* Add the 1st extract coconut milk only towards the end, after adding the cooked godhumai to the jaggery.
* Once the 1st extract is added, mix well and switch off the flame. Avoid boiling it for long.
* If you want less sweet reduce the jaggery qty accordingly.

🎁 Planning return gifts for your next function? SAVE THIS!

Over the years, I’ve realised that when choosing a return gift, I personally prefer picking something that has a good chance of being used rather than simply passed on. ❤️

So I put together some of my useful + personal picks — ideas that could work for different age groups and occasions like Navarathri, baby showers, poojas, housewarming, weddings and other family functions.

And many of the items on this list are things I’ve personally given as return gifts over the years for different occasions, so this is very much my own curation based on what I would consider giving. ✨

From earrings & bangles to kitchen storage, jewellery organisers, travel pouches, everyday-use items, pooja essentials and cute picks for kids — there are quite a few options to choose from.

Of course, not every item will suit everyone, and that’s completely okay! The idea is simply to choose something that may be useful to the person receiving it — or at least to someone in their family. 😊

And one more thing I truly believe: return gifts are not mandatory. ❤️
If you don’t want to give one, that’s completely okay too. It’s the thought behind the function and the people we celebrate with that matters.

I’ve kept this list around things I would personally consider — useful, practical and easy to use.

📌 SAVE this post if you’re planning a function or just want a return-gift list handy for later.

💬 Which one would you actually love to receive?

✨ Come see what I packed as return gifts for my baby shower! 💛

🎁 Each return gift included:
• Jute bag from @dhanlaxmicoverpune

• Glass bangles with matching jhumkas
• Earrings holder pouch
• Silk thread bangles with tic-tac clips/hair clips for the little girls
All the above from @the_creative_handwork

Last set of bangles in the reel from local shop in Srirangam, Trichy.

I found Deepika’s @the_creative_handwork page while searching for return gift ideas and instantly loved her bangles paired with matching jhumkas. I also requested silk thread bangles for the kids by sharing their age groups, and she customized them accordingly.

When I saw the earrings holder pouch on her page, I knew it would make a lovely addition too. I simply shared all my requirements, and she took care of everything—from neatly packing each set to labeling adult and kids’ sizes separately.

The raindrop bangles were thick, sturdy, and excellent in quality, and the matching jhumkas made every set look even more beautiful. The colours were beautiful❤️❤️. The pricing was reasonable, quality was very good, the packaging was perfect, and communication was smooth and easy.

If you’re looking for bangles, tamboolam sets, navarathri return gifts or baby shower return gifts, I’d definitely recommend checking out her page. 💛✨
