As Portland enters 2025 the constitutes have a new form of municipal representation. Through rank choice voting, four geographical districts will be represented by three council members from their region. District 2 is the North/NE Portland.

@kanalforportland is from the area, son of union members and studied in Washington State. He was active in speaking out against the war in Iraq as well as Palestinian liberation back in the early 2000's. He has worked as the PM for the Police accountability commission.

@elanaforportland has served with the Governor, is part of the queer community, and builds on a vision of activism.Gun violence prevention, short/long term solutions, as well as affordability drives her to use her voice to advocate for those in N/NE PDX.

@danryanforpdx showed his true colors when he was commissioner. As he continues to cut funds to much needed public services, flaunts queer privilege, and criminalizes our houseless neighbors, he is someone that needs to be held accountable.

@pdxcityclub had a four event series for all district representatives. Hosted by Sophie Green from the @willametteweek the first was held at Alberta Rose Theaterw taken in The Alberta Rose Theatre by @rumblesofrevolution

@storyandtune opened for @flamygrant last month at @showdownportland and brought an emotionally charge set. A call to action was given from the stage to continue to stand against the authoritarian regime taking hold. We heard new songs, welcomed them back from tour, and felt a sense of rejuvenation.

The trauma informed harmonies drifted through the saloon and awakened the spirits of new listeners. The home city fans were glad to have them home. Summer is coming soon so be ready for more new music, shows, and community building. Karyn and Ben continue to uplift the folk scene and inspire us to examine those spaces of uncertainty.

What a fun way to kick off the first quarter of 2025. @claire.nelson.5667 of @lynyrdnimoy put a show together at @misdemeanormeadows along with @codyweathersmusic. These two have been such an amazing encouragement to do what I love and share that with others.

Both Claire and Cody work hard in the community and are always putting together a gig or at an open mic. This is an example that stands out and their humility shines. They have the musical talent that brings others together and makes you want to share your authentic self.

Support the local music scene and support your friends. Music allows a community to manifest and helps when there is a need for creative expression.

@bobbyjvalentine celebrated the release of his new album "Familiar Places" at @artichoke.music. A collection of new and well-loved songs about what we find in the familiar, it was nice to hear a mix of old and new songs. Opening that night was @tylerstenson who expressed a welcoming return to playing music for others. It's special to see a musician connect with the audience and glow with a reignited passion.

Bobby has been on tour through January and continues to share his talent all over the country. It's been several months since the music video for "You'd Call Me Up" and hopefully we will have him back in Portland soon.

@pdxcityclub hosted the top 5 mayoral candidates for Portland's general election. Around 400 constituents attended the evening hosted at @sanctuaryhall in SW Portland. Moderator Jeff Mapes who is retired from the @theoregonian and @opbphoto presented selected questions from local voters to the candidates.

Topics related to houselessness, transportation, front line mental health resources, and multi-unit family dwellings allowed these five individuals an opportunity to lay out their vision for the leadership of Portland.

This was the third of four candidate forums that City Club of Portland has put on during this general election season. The city is looking for ways to restore and revitalize the downtown core but needs to address areas past 122nd and in East Portland.

@samaraedavis shines through her vocals and allows passion to be delivered. R & B isn't easy to tackle and she brings a range with the band that speaks emotionally to the audience. She is an act you don't wanna miss on a nice summer evening.

Thanks @rosebud.growers for hosting a great lineup for 4/20 this year. Great cannabis and infused treats. Stop by if you're in NE Portland. And thank you @knottstreetcollective for getting this talent lineup on stage.

@bobbyjvalentine is a man on a mission. This traveling musician is now based in Portland but the second he touches down he is planning another tour. Hardworking, consistent internal investigation, and community focused his music has the power of healing. Recently hitched and the glow apparent Bobby's discography takes us on a journey that is one of vulnerability.

Passing the decade marker of embarking on this singer/song writer adventure he has played many venues, be awarded tokens of validation, and creates a bigger fan base at each performance. Being a queer creative he discusses his relationship with faith and being gay. He also bridges the intergenerational audience space.

Learn to slow down, we are all part of the joke, and who told you love wouldn't cost you a thing, are just themes of reflection, acceptance, and transformation. Bobby is saving lives, challenging himself, and allowing others to model avenues of growth for themselves.

@storyandtune are an amazing duo who continue to share the lived experience that shapes their musical narrative and stage presence. Songs describing parenthood, self discovery, and natural phenomenons create an intimate atmosphere to engage with them. Having found each other over this very same platform, social media continues to be a tool to bring creatives together and even in this case build a life.

Karyn's vocals are filled with a comforting timber that makes the storytelling come to life. Accompanied by Ben on several instrumental backings, the melodies match the emotions that are transformed through this musical serenity.

Thank you @easyfolkmedia and @haymakerpdx for hosting a great evening with new friends.

@powellsbooks hosted author @mjuhae this month as she spoke about her experience putting together Starry Field. This talk was led by @joonae.hk who is part of @bipocadoptees. The importance of knowing your family heritage is something that matters to many. Margaret discussed how her skills as a journalist helped uncover her grandfather's history. A man who was tagged and imprisoned for being a student organizer with the Communist Party of Korea, this book is a powerful display of uncovering family history.

Themes of self discovery, family healing, and stigmatization are woven into a story of discovery. The ability to have a connection to your past is one that is beneficial to individuals as well as the generations that come after. The conversations that Margaret had with her grandmother were stories that hadn't been discussed until this project started. Reclaiming the history and learning of the Japanese colonization of Korea gives a profound backdrop to discovering one's family history.

@pdxcityclub hosted an event at @kellsportland as part of their community mental health conversation series. The subject of substance use disorder, houselessness, and mental health services has been discussed intensely the last few years. City Club introduced the public to those working in the community and engaging with those dealing with these societal barriers. With the recriminalization of many marganizlized communities and resources scarce or at capacity there is focus to bring a constructive model of community aid to address these issues

The panel was facilitated by @wynnewakkila of City Club and the panelists came from different city sectors. Lielah Leighton, Dr. Lisa Stewart, Brian Jacoby, Lt. Chris Burley, and Emily Tochon brought their different perspectives on engagement and levels of interaction. Representing mental health service providers, frontline responders, and law enforcement each individual spoke on the urgency to assess what we are seeing in our city streets.

The State and local government has continually diverted funds and the mental health services are maxed out. The recriminalization of those living with substance use disorder is big business for lobbyists and continues NIMBY culture. The city has failed to address the root causes of these social issues. Capitalism and neo liberalism continues to privatize resources and agents of the state use repressive tactics on those holding law makers accountable for the profits they are making on this crisis.

We need 3000 more beds in rehab facilities. We need the alcohol and pharmaceutical companies to not have sway on bills being passed in Salem. We need trigger happy cops off the force and major improvements training law enforcement in general. Peers need to be compensated for the work they do and the prison industrial complex needs to be held accountable for preying on those dealing with substance use and mental health issues.

@bipocadoptees came together to listen to several authors who shared their lived experience. Hosted by @portlandcenterstage and @constellationreading it was a powerful night for the community to use their voices to acknowledge, present, and display powerful examples through written word, what being a BIPOC Adoptee can be like.

Co-Mc's @joonae.hk and @lisermac were amazing at bringing the energy, allowing those outside the community to hear our words, and providing fellowship outside the event for those wanting a deeper connection. Please support them at @bipocadopteesvoices.

A BIG THANK YOU to @shannonelainegibney @alicestephensbooks @thesusanito @radiointhewoods @alicestephensbooks and @bishopandwilde for all the books, conversations, and dedicating your time to let us BIPOC Adoptees know WE ARE NOT ALONE

Black, Indigenous, and People of Color need to be heard and uplifted. I'm a Peruvian adoptee living in the Diaspora. My camera, words, and actions are my resistance. It is my way of turning my narrative into movement rather than isolation. Thank you everyone involved in this event.

*IF YOU'RE A BIPOC ADOPTEE CHECK OUT @bipocadopteesvoices website for info on the BIPOC ADOPTEE CONFERENCE being held later this year*

The importance of learning how to bring forth your political points was an important factor when meeting with representative. Groups like @4drecovery , @voaoregon , @oregonmomsforaddictionrecovery , and @mhaoforegon brought staff to participate in this advocacy day.

A few of the house bills that were being promoted by @oregon.recovers were HB 4093 which requires one of the nine OLCC commissioners to have a background in public health and HB 4120 which is jail-based medication for opioid use disorder grant program and allows jail-based counseling and other programs serving adults in custody.

Along with the 4D substance use disorder legislative priorities, you saw the need for recovery housing through HB 1530, the expansion of public safety strategies to incorporate recovery first and engagement practices, as well as expanding the behavioral health workforce recruitment and retention strategies. taken in Oregon State Capitol by @rumblesofrevolution
