Work Won’t Love Me Back or Replace the Devotion I Had for You

I became a public servant for love.

You were 27 and had paid back most of your student loans with AmeriCorps education awards. I was 22, with a debt-to-savings ratio of 3:1 (which was not bad, actually) and no parent’s guest apartment or friends’ couch within 2,000 miles. No people in the first place.

When you asked me to be your girlfriend in January, you had already decided to relocate for a third AmeriCorps term in May. I found out in March and was in too deep to see the risks of moving across the country with a relative stranger.

You were not very charismatic, except when describing your commitment to service and devotion to your hometown of Portland, where you first caught the public-service bug. At Portland State, whose slogan is “Let Knowledge Serve the City,” you became committed to the idea of a morally meaningful life, one that would undo the wrongs done to us, and the wrongs we had done to ourselves, by paying forward into the world the care we hoped to get back.

It took a while to see through your depiction of pure altruism to the underlying motivator, which was shame.

And when work wouldn’t love you back, there was shame for me to carry.

Not in the sense that you needed me to sit with you and talk through your feelings. In the sense that I, too, needed to devote myself to work in this self-sacrificial way, because it aggravated your shame to be associated with someone who wasn’t taking their career seriously.

It became career more than vocation quite quickly, where advancing your career was morally good simply because the jobs were in a certain sector. These days I like to remind myself that you file to incorporate as a nonprofit the same way you would a business. Nonprofit is just a classification of business. It is not an inherently good structure, and in fact your typical nonprofit relies on low-wage workers and unpaid labor as much as that beloved local chain (too many to name, am I right) you found out unfortch has been union busting.

But that’s for another post.

like all of you, i haven’t actually left the house in several years, having happily enjoyed my DoorDash drone-delivered 3D-printed nutrients while consuming the latest dank memes from Cultural Tzar Elon Musk

but here’s some AI-generated images of what it might have looked like had there been a release party for a book called Choice Cuts featuring 8 years of my photos

theoretically, had real life interactions not been outlawed by the administration of God Emperor Peter Thiel, such a book might be purchased from stores such as @specksrecords @secretroompdx and @broadwaybooks

alas, it was all a fiction

i’ve been stalling on posting these pictures from the St Johns Bizarre because i hate having to choose just 20 out of the 40 photos that i took, all of which i like. i yearn for the days of posting every single photo on facebook, one by one so each picture got its chance to shine, and tagging you all so the photo showed up on the feeds of your friends and families too, and then your Aunt Carol from back in Michigan would comment and say “Love to see you having fun, rock star!”. does Aunt Carol even know what you’re up to these days??

you can find the rest of the pictures on my photo archive website, and i know most of you won’t go to that effort to check them out but that’s okay.

love to you and the St Johns Bizarre and to your estranged extended family as well

🌈 Next week at Pulse Open Mic at Kava Saia, we’re honored to feature the powerful voice of César for Pride Month.

Though the announcement is coming in hot, this feature has been in the works for a while—and we couldn’t be more excited. César will be sharing poems that dive deep into his lived experiences, offering truth, reflection, and liberation through every line.

🗓️ Don’t miss this one. It’s going to be unforgettable.

✨ About the poet:
César is a queer Peruvian transracial/transnational adoptee living in diaspora. A poet, singer, and songwriter, his work explores intersectional identity, advocacy, and the barriers that shape our world—with a mission to inspire narrative change and collective witness.

Sign-ups: 7:30pm
Mic On: 8pm

We can’t wait for you to join us!
