POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I’m a huge fan of @peel_gallery in Carrboro. I’ve never struggled to make work but i’ve also not really figured out what to do with it or how to sell it. Recently people have been asking for prints. Peel has made it easy for me to that. So, if there are any images of mine you want please message me with the post that has the image (the ones in this post are just examples but there are 25 thousands other images here. I’ll respond to let you know that I’ve found it (I’m not sure where done if these reside) and sent it to Peel to print- and get your address and payment info.

This way I can sell work and Peel gets to make prints. In general I’d rather print on the best paper at the highest quality. I have them print on standard size paper with a white border (so you can get a simple frame for them) - having said that I also want to work with people who may need a less high quality paper.

8x10 $150
11x14 $200
16x20 $300

These are non editioned prints. At some point I might do something like that with a gallery - right now I want to make them available at low cost in a way that also supports @peel_gallery by @rumurpix

I want to tell you a little bit about my journey as an artist/photographer.
I got interested in photo in high school and joined the yearbook and the newspaper. The day after I graduated I did my first real “shoot”. The Klan marched in my hometown and I documented it.

When I went to college I knew I wanted to be a photographer but I chafed against expectations and systems. I met a photo student, Chris Mahoney, who gave me two pieces of amazing advice. Don’t crop your images and - go to the photo book store and look at all the books. I did  and discovered what energized me. Two years later I took a color printing class and stumbled into my mall project. My wonderful teacher inspired me to continue it. That was my first real project. I drove across the country and shot in malls that summer. My friend and I met almost no one and it was not a fun trip. Still, I got some important work done. It just took 20 plus years for people to notice it.

The next year I took my first photo class and made both a personal book and a book about the people who sold stuff on Astor Place (at the time I didn’t realize that this project was deeply connected to the mall project- different aspects of Commerce). I might have to make a book with both of them.

Shortly after my mall trip I started a band. I began to move from taking pictures of bands playing - to making band portraits to documenting the scene.

A few years later I met Suki Hawley and we began a long practice of working together. Our first film “Half-Cocked” continued that documentation and combined it with her background in classic Hollywood. We took that film on tour like a band. The soundtrack she put together slaps hard. We followed that up with another film (on film) about the music scene, “Radiation”.

We started to make documentaries. The first “Horns and Halos” was about an underground publisher who re-printed a book about GW Bush - (we were joined by David Beilinson for that and thereafter). Then came “Code 33”, “Battle for Brooklyn”, “Who Took Johnny”, “All The Rage: Saved by Sarno”, “Working in Protest”, “The Commons” and more recently 4 years of documenting the Savannah Bananas. In 2021 we made a short about the Savannah Bananas for SportsCenter. That led to a series about the first multi city Banana Ball tour ; Bananaland. Then we did a series about the second tour. Then we kept shooting so that we could make a movie. we are making that movie. It premieres at Truist Stadium in Atlanta in June with all six teams at the party - get on the lottery list at Bananaball.com by @rumurpix

In the early 2010’s I started to make videos for the songs that my band recorded in the 90s. I used footage. I have been shooting all along that felt appropriate to connect to the songs. However, my primary goal was simply making videos because people shared videos, but not songs and I wanted people to hear our music. by @rumurpix

I took a photo pretty much every day of the first year of @miss_construedd life. She made this collage of them. She’s now the “weirdest aunt ever” - she drew a self portrait with that phrase for her new nephew. My oldest had a baby. I’m a grandfather. It’s in my bio. I encouraged her an her husband to do a 21 year time lapse ;) by @rumurpix

I met Chris my Sophomore year when he was moving into the dorm with a Dinosaur shirt on. Band shirts were kind of like name tags at a conference. We spent that year drinking beer, going shows, and listening to records. The next fall, we brought our guitars back to school and started playing in the basement with Chris’s RA, Rachael. Two years later we were playing at the International Pop Underground Festival in Olympia. This is a song I no longer gave any idea how to play. It’s on our record Punk Rock city USA on @slumberlandrecords - it’s a bit cleaner on the record. We were seen as twee- but we weren’t all that twee on that day. We listened to a lot of my bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, meat puppets, Buffalo tom etc by @rumurpix

@stereolabgroop in fall 1992. Sherry Hood was handling their affairs in The US and it looks like they had borrowed Bill Ryan’s van -which I think is behind them. their album was being released on. @slumberlandrecords and we were about to put out our first album with them. I think these are the first photos that were taken in the US. by @rumurpix

These past two weeks involved six shoot days, two rest days, then 4 shoot days - the last of which was The Banana Bowl. I got to the stadium at 9. I left it at 2 am - I shot over 7 hours of footage on that day- the culmination of 5 years of shooting. I was pretty locked in but it was chaotic. After 3 days of rehearsal I knew what was going to happen with the entertainment but not with the game. It was a pitching dog fight - @adallldayy and @brettsanchez17 each gave up a single hit - both of which were home runs. The game moved fast m, and despite every team debuting a song (written by a team of songwriters led by @pasekandpaul ) and dance ( choreographed by @nopenother and @dance_izm3 ) between innings it was well under the two hour time limit. My camera is trained in the players and coaches more than the game so I have little idea of what’s happening. The camera is heavy. By the end of the game my feet were killing me and I had to just keep going. It ended with a showdown because the score was tied at the end of 9 innings. @topher_clarke and @dan_hoz34 pitched the showdowns- two amazingly generous souls- My camera was trained on the team that lost and it was even harder to shoot. Still, I knew I had to tell the story. That’s the hardest part. I want both teams to win and it’s wildly uncomfortable to film the sadness, but sadness is part of the story. @cozmikgangsta was shooting on the other side and I knew it was covered. So I stayed and filmed the disappointment of people I love and respect. Banana Ball is different. You don’t root against people - or at least I don’t. I feel very lucky to have been a part of this ride. The rain started as soon as everyone had left the field. @yellowtuxjesse signed until the last fan - searching to make sure that no one left disappointed. Then he walked up the stairs as the rain began to fall. The drive home was rainy. We stopped for coffee and I saw the Halloween display that reflected how I felt. I left it all on the field, the sun came out as we got near home by @rumurpix
