Towards the end of 2021, I started walking as a means to break up my study days, and to get some sweet fresh air.
I then started the C25K programme to up the ante. I ran my first 5K in December '21 but swore that I'd never enter a race. I swore I'd never post about it on Instagram.

So here we are...

My 1st Race

Whilst I'm indoors, looking after my poorly 3 year old, it's a perfect time to reflect on my singular medal from 2022.

I'd signed up for the London ASICS 10k at the beginning of the year as a barometer of where I was. I was already quite regularly doing the 10k distance, although I always run solo and my surrounding area is just great big hills in every direction. So I was interested in running a flatter course, running the streets of London and running with other people.
My best 10k time up to this point was around 55mins, and I wanted to try for under 50mins. The weather was dangerously hot though, and we were warned not to go for PBs. Normally I wouldn't hydrate during a 10k but we were strongly advised to use the refreshment points.

I arrived and instantly felt as though everyone else was so much better equipped, better at running and had tons more experience than myself. My running gear suddenly felt like it marked me out as someone with 'all the gear, but no idea'.

Everyone was talking about all the races they'd already done, there was a 55min pace setter amongst us who was telling us all his tactics and suddenly I felt like my sub 50mins target was naive.

Then the crowd started moving towards the start line and it was game time. I had one tactic in my head and that was to start slow. Don't let the adrenaline trick me into a sprint start. I realised that I had positioned myself as far away from the water station, at the start line, as I could get, so that could have gone better. Next thing I was on the start line, pressing my watch button and running.

I kept a steady pace, following the legs in front of me, moving on to other legs if I started to overtake. The weather was glorious, the atmosphere was special, with music booming out around the entire course. I tried to take in the sights as best as I could whilst concentrating on navigating the streets of London.

I saw the finish line and gave it everything I had left, weaving and speeding past runners feeling like a superhero. Then as I got closer I realised it was actually the 9km mark and that I still had another 1k to run 😬 , but spurred on by pure pride I kept a steady sprint pace to the end. taken in London, United Kingdom by @run_jaymi_run

Whilst still stuck indoors with the sniffles, I may as well post about my final event, back in September, where I finished 4th and got a 10k PB.

We were on holiday in Centre Parcs, De Vossemeren, Belgium, and purely by coincidence they were running their annual 10k Race at the end of our stay.
I enquired at the reception desk and the woman organising it was very excited by my interest. I said I'd think about it and then went on to enjoy a lovely week with my family, including an awesome day on the water obstacle course that absolutely battered my knees.

The night before the race, I had all the excuses ready, not to take part, but then I thought about having the actual experience of just running in another country, and that I didn't need to put any pressure on myself because I was on holiday and had been relaxing all week so there were no expectations.
With my mind made up, I awoke the next morning and made my way to the race, whilst everyone else was fast asleep.

The race organiser was excited to see me and nicknamed me 'the fit English guy', which if she'd seen me a year earlier would have been 'the fat English guy' so that was a nice ego boost. Then she explained the rules to all the runners, in Flemish! 😬 Once she'd finished, she then went through the rules again in English, which confused all the other runners, so she explained that there was an English guy, which got everyone staring at eachother. I raised my hand and said hi and we all laughed together.

The race started, and at the first turn a guy beside me was taken out by a giant dog! I started thinking to myself that they do races differently here, but thankfully there were no more animal attacks.
A runner, who I later found out was the director of centre parcs, was running at a similar pace as me and checked if I was okay. I asked if he was doing the 10k route and if so I'd follow him, which he was, so we were paired for the duration of the run.
The run was absolutely beautiful, the scenery and the setting were amazing. At one point, there were three of us running across this long bridge crossing the huge lake, surrounded by fog and forest, with no other sound at all (photo included at the end) taken in De Vossemeren by @run_jaymi_run
