"Cancer gave me a battle I never asked for. The military gave me a mission I was proud to accept. And carrying this flag gives me a reminder to stand tall and keep moving forward."

Robert is a Navy Veteran and a cancer survivor. On Day 3 of One Flag Forward, presented by USAA, he carries the flag through his hometown of Philadelphia.

"When I carry the flag, I don't just carry a piece of cloth. I carry generations of Americans who believe this country is worth defending."

250 miles. New York to Washington, DC. Starting 9/12, the day America came together 25 years ago. One flag, passed hand to hand. by @runbeyondthescar

A huge shout out to all of the Eagles from across the nation who took on the Marine Corps Marathon this past weekend.

Every mile was a reminder of our shared mission - to enrich the lives of America’s veterans through movement and community. Way to get after it, Eagles! by @runbeyondthescar

Was such an honor to run the 50th Marine Corps Marathon yesterday! It was the perfect environment for a race. The crowd was intense and on every corner there was Marines cheering you and pushing you past your limits!#teamrwb #radrabbit #aer2025 #running #run #runhappy #runner #runningmotivation #runnersofinstagram #runners #instarunners

Even though I deferred the Chicago Marathon this year, I got to experience Marathon Weekend in a whole new way, and it was such a fun and memorable experience!

I loved being an ambassador for @saltstick saltstick at the expo (and the amazing swag was a bonus! ), checking out all the running pop-ups like @brooksrunning and @endorphinsrunning , and soaking up all the excitement leading up to race day.

But one of the biggest highlights was getting to do Anthony Rizzo’s shakeout run at Brooks with my son! Knowing all that Anthony Rizzo has done for Lurie Children’s Hospital, where he and his brothers have received care, made that experience even more special. His impact on the hospital and the families it serves is truly incredible.

While I may not be running the marathon this year, I can’t wait to be on the other side of the course tomorrow, cheering on every runner, celebrating their hard work, and soaking up all the Chicago Marathon!

Good luck to everyone running tomorrow! You’ve put in the work, and now it’s time to shine! #chimarathon #runner #runnersofinstagram #marathontraining #run by @runbeyondthescar

Sometimes the hardest part of running is knowing when not to run.
After months of training and looking forward to the Chicago Marathon, I’ve had to make the difficult decision to defer my race due to having pneumonia and a collapsed lung about three weeks ago.
This isn’t how I imagined this chapter of my marathon journey going. There’s a lot of disappointment in stepping back after putting in so much time, effort, and heart. But right now, my health has to come first.
Chicago, I’ll see you at the starting line next year. I’m super excited to actually be a spectator this year and participate in one of the cheer zones! by @runbeyondthescar

Finally having time to post and reflect on what I had the opportunity to experience. Day 3 of One Flag Forward was one of those days that I know I’ll remember for a long time.
Carrying this flag for 51 miles was physically exhausting, but somewhere along the road, the miles became about more than just the distance. Every step gave me time to think about the people I’m doing this for, the sacrifices that have been made for this country, and how much this flag means to me personally.
There were moments when my body wanted to stop. But I kept going. 51 miles later, I’m tired, sore, and incredibly grateful, and honored.
Grateful for everyone who was supporting me, from afar, grateful for everyone I had the opportunity to run with and learn their story. Thankful for all the support teams who worked countless hours to make this journey and vision possible. It was amazing to witness cars honking and people stopping to say hello, or simply took a moment to recognize what we’re doing. I’m forever grateful to have been part of this. #teamrwb #wearblue #usaa #oneflagforward #veterans by @runbeyondthescar

All prepped and ready for Day 3 of the One Flag Forward. Tomorrow I’ll carry the flag to honor all those who stood before us, beside us and the next generation that will come after us. When I look at the flag it symbolizes Honor, Legacy, and all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice to defend this country.

I’ll be carrying the flag tomorrow for everyone, but two Marines in particular who I’ve come to know through their stories.

Lance Cpl. Nicholas Brian Kleiboeker was a Combat Engineer assigned to 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division. During Operation Iraqi Freedom, he was killed on May 13, 2003, near Al Hillah, Iraq, when a munitions bunker he was working in caught fire and exploded. He had been loading ammunition from the bunker into a vehicle when he became trapped in the fire and explosion. LCPL Kleiboeker served with my brother-in-law in Iraq. He was a good friend, and the namesake of my nephew.

Sgt. Trevor J. Johnson was a Combat Engineer with 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, serving in Afghanistan in support of 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines. On January 27, 2009, in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, Johnson and fellow Combat Engineer Sgt. David W. Wallace were conducting a route-clearance mission to provide mobility for Marines. During the mission, the engineers discovered and cleared five IEDs. A sixth IED detonated, killing Johnson and Wallace. SGT Johnson also served with my brother in law and was a close friend. #oneflagforward#usaa #teamrwb #wearblue by @runbeyondthescar

September 11, 2001 was a day that changed the world forever. A day when ordinary mornings became moments of unimaginable heartbreak. A day when thousands of lives were taken, families were shattered, and an entire generation learned what it meant to never forget.
Twenty five years have passed. Buildings have been rebuilt
but some memories never fade.

Today we remember all those who never came home. We remember the firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and everyday heroes who ran toward danger when everyone else was running away,
and we remember those who survived carrying memories, grief, and scars that time can never completely erase.

Today, we pause and remember. by @runbeyondthescar

After all those miles, it was time to add more steps in and explore everything Sydney had to offer. From Sydney harbour and the iconic Opera House to amazing food at the Rocks, unforgettable ocean views, and lots of photo opportunities with new animals.

These legs may be tired, but the memories are well worth it.

Some days you run for the finish line, some days you run for everything it took to get there. 26.2 miles of memories, tough early morning training days, setbacks, and so many people who kept me going when it got hard.

Crossing that finish line and getting my 5th star is a moment I’ll never forget.
Really grateful for this journey, for the people who’ve been part of it, and for the chance to do something I once only dreamed about.

5 down, 3 more to go!

Sydney, thank you for an amazing experience!
