Hello everyone, recently one of our most supportive donors, Mark, passed away expectedly. He was a fierce advocate for human rights and all around great human being. His partner, and other Run for the Migrants participant, donated all of his clothing to us to take to shelters, which we did. She said that even though this process was extremely difficult she knew that this is what he would have wanted. So now his items are in the hands of shelters both in Sonora where they will be distributed to migrants. Our hope is that his kind and generous spirit will help guide them on their journey. We will miss Mark and are so grateful for his support. Thank you Sara as well, another fierce advocate for migrants and refugees, who will be in grad school in Europe working with refugee populations there. We could not do this without the support of our donors. by @runforthemigrants

AN UPDATE: So far this summer we were able to get supplies to CCAM in Caborca and Casa de la Misericordia in Nogales. A common word heard at shelters is dignity/Dignidad. Dignity is a human right and something everyone deserves. The journey migrants make is a difficult one and shelters are one of the few if not only places where they can rest and get their basic needs met. Personal hygiene items and comfortable, clean clothes are one of the most common items we get requested from shelters. This is something often taken for granted but for a migrant or recently deported person, their dignity has often been stripped away by the systems in power. A change of shoes, underwear, socks or items to brush your teeth, shave or take a shower make all the difference. Having been at shelters when these items are distributed, it is amazing how fast they go, showing how intense the needs are. Even though these donations are just a drop in a bucket, every little bit helps. They serve as a reminder that everyone deserves dignity. Even if it is in the simple things. by @runforthemigrants

C-CAM functions as an aid center and food kitchen but does not have a formal shelter space for folks to spend the night. There is a train that passes through Caborca which many migrants take to the border. With recent asylum and immigration restrictions migrants will inevitably be forced to take drastic measures to reach the united states. This now means that for many, their only choice is to cross through the Sonoran Desert. Additionally, many organizations that aid migrants in Mexico have been impacted due to the cuts to international aide from the Trump administration. This has included services from NGOs and organizations like the Red Cross.
One good piece of news is that C-CAM was recently donated a plot of land to build a shelter/community center and has broken ground on building. As migration policy changes, we anticipate places like Caborca being major hubs for migrants in the future. by @runforthemigrants

*Shelter Spotlight*
CCAMYN Casa del Migrante in Altar, Mexico has been serving the migrant community for over two decades. It started in the late 90s in the plaza outside the church in Altar after the fondodoras (original founders of the shelter) noticed large numbers of young men who were moving through the area and sleeping in the plaza. This was largely due to prevention through deterrence policy which forces migrants to travel through the most dangerous parts of the Sonoran Desert. Through grassroots organizing and fundraising they were able to first serve meals outside on the plaza and then eventually the Casa itself.

CCAMYN was the first beneficiary of Run for the Migrants. by @runforthemigrants
