You gotta believe it to achieve it! ✨

One of the hardest parts of marathoning is having the confidence in yourself to shoot your shot, to swing big, to go after a scary, audacious goal. You can have all the miles under your belt, all the great workouts, but without belief, this can mean nothing. You’ve gotta believe it to achieve it!

So one of my jobs as a coach is to instill that belief, to help you trust in yourself and believe you are capable of amazing things! If I could give my athletes one gift, it would be this self-confidence and belief that great things are possible.

Our @running_joyfully team leaned into belief, leaned into big goals, and believed that on Sunday, things would all go right. And they did! Wow, they did - CIM was a magical day of personal bests and big breakthroughs, physical and mental. Bearing witness to this is my favorite part of being a coach - watching our team trust in themselves brought me to tears on the course. There’s nothing quite like seeing your athletes ✨ BELIEVE ✨

What a day, what a year. So proud, so grateful! 🩵

10 years ago at the California International Marathon 🥰🥰

A decade ago, I ran my first marathon at @runcim262. This was LONG before super shoes (I wore the New Balance 1400s which are basically a ballet flat! 🥿) - shoe technology has come a long way since then! But all the super shoes and sports nutrition advances can’t make the marathon any easier - it’s still a 26.2 mile challenge!

I went out too fast (easy to do at CIM… don’t make this mistake!) and I started to hit the dreaded wall around mile 21… for 3 miles I watched the pace slip from 6:00 to 6:10 to 6:20… there were some dark miles in there 😩 But after a decade of marathoning, I know that hard miles are inevitable - that’s just a part of the marathon! You are going to encounter some rough spots - and it’s all about how you handle those challenging miles. You’ve got to take it one mile at a time, and stay open to the possibility that things are going to turn around in the next mile!

Things did turn around for me - I was able to rebound in the last 5k, find the pace again, pass some women to move up into the Top 10, and finish strong to earn my first Olympic Trials qualifier! It was an emotional finish - there’s nothing quite like crossing the finish line of your first marathon! 🥰

Good luck to all the first-time marathoners and everyone racing CIM this weekend - have a JOYFUL race!!

Over the summer, my dermatologist told me that 25+ years of running in the sun was catching up with me. He found some pre-cancerous cells on my nose, which he promptly froze off, and he told me that I needed to seriously double-down on my sun protection. I’m now a “wear-a-hat-every-day” runner and I’m a really prioritizing sunscreen (something I was good but admittedly not great about always applying pre-run).

I asked you all for your favorite sports sunscreen recs for sweaty runners and I tested out a bunch. I wanted a paraben-free sunscreen that didn’t leave a white cast and that was sweat-resistant.

My far-and-away favorite - @teamzealios! Zealios makes performance sunscreen for athletes, among other personal care products. Their Sport Performance Sunscreen feels like moisturizing skincare (so I’m much more likely to actually apply it pre-run!), isn’t greasy or chalky, and has stood the test of sweaty long runs.

This isn’t a paid advertisement, just wanted to share about a product I’ve found, bought, and loved. And if you haven’t been prioritizing sun protection on the run and going to the dermatologist annually, please let this be your reminder! ☀️

I had the immense honor of being inducted into the @sacramentorunningassociation Hall of Fame this weekend, alongside my brother @bg_gregg and Dr. Steve Polansky. It was the most special of weekends reflecting on 25+ years of running and reliving some of my athletic highs and favorite running memories!

Thank you, SRA, for this great honor, and for the many magical moments you’ve made possible for me at @runcim262 ✨

The most important rule of soccer isn’t “no hands.”

I’m getting ready to coach my second season of preschooler soccer this fall, and it has me reflecting on what we told the kids was the #1 rule.

It’s not “don’t steal the ball from your teammates” (though this is *very* important to instill in these 3 & 4 year olds, I’ve learned!).

The #1 rule of soccer is to HAVE FUN!

As a coach, my goal is to instill joy and confidence in these youngsters and make their sporting experience a positive one. This isn’t just a preschool thing, though. It’s similarly my job to remind the @running_joyfully runners who I support that we can hold performance goals and process goals simultaneously. We can chase fast times *while* enjoying the training - I firmly believe that if we’re too focused on the outcome, it will steal the joy (and we probably won’t reach that outcome goal, either!).

As you get ready for fall marathon season, take a page out of the preschool soccer book and make sure you’re HAVING FUN out there! 😁 Approach your training with focus and dedication, but don’t take yourself *too* seriously. At the end of the day, it’s just running. We GET to do this, we don’t HAVE to. If we’ve lost the joy, we’ve lost the plot.

Postpartum return to running isn’t one-size-fits-all, and there’s isn’t a playbook telling you exactly how you should return.

As a former pro runner who recently returned to running after my 2nd baby, I designed my own return the same way I coach: drawing on my background in public health (I have an MPH from @brownpublichealth) and relying on research-backed, evidence-based protocols to guide moms back to training after baby.

The latest research says postpartum return to running should be highly individualized. Some factors that matter:
• Type of birth + birth recovery
• Physical activity during pregnancy
• Postpartum sleep and mental health
• Support systems (like paid family leave) and childcare access

My return might not look exactly like yours - we’re not here for cookie cutter plans. Here are the things I think about when supporting postpartum moms:

🔹 Rebuilding strength - overall, core, and pelvic floor
🔹 Walking & other aerobic cross-training (gotta walk before we run!)
🔹 Passing a run readiness screening test
🔹 Gradual integration of running, starting with run/walk intervals
🔹 Effort over pace
🔹 Adequate fueling & hydration (especially for breastfeeding moms!)
🔹 Not holding timelines too tightly - flexibility is key!

Save this if you’re a pregnant or postpartum runner or send to your favorite mother runner or mother-to-be!

Women - we are goddesses for all we have done with these bodies.

This body has taken me to 4 Olympic Trials, through difficult pregnancies and losses, and to two beautiful babies. We might have taken the long way, in running and in motherhood, but we knew we’d get there someday. We made it. Just look at us now 💕

Whatever you’re going through, whatever challenge you’re facing, remember how strong and resilient and amazing your body is, and appreciate all that it’s done for you.

Big dreams take you far! 🦋

10 years ago today, I lined up at historic Hayward Field, living out a dream I’d been chasing for two Olympic cycles. I raced at the 2016 Olympic Trials in the 10,000 meters, finishing 11th.

I didn’t make the Olympic team, but honestly that had never been the goal. My dream had been to be in the arena - and I was! I was happy to be racing against America’s best, and to run a race I was proud of. On a hot day in Eugene, I put myself in the mix and laid it all out there.

If you’d looked at my times from high school and college, you’d never have thought I would eventually compete at the Olympic Trials. I was never a state champion or All-American. I didn’t have the traditional credentials of an Olympic Trials Qualifier - but I had some big dreams! And perhaps some audacious optimism! 🤪

Reflecting back a decade later, I’m proud of this past version of me, a young woman who dared to dream and who bet on herself, against the odds. I believed I could make a big leap, and I did - through a lot of hard work and with a support crew second to none.

Fast forward 10 years, and now I have the privilege of being part of the support crew of the next generation of dreamers. I am honored to coach a group of talented, dedicated women - the @running_joyfully Elite team - chasing 2028 Olympic Trials Qualifiers. Some women have already qualified, some will need to make a big leap to get to the Trials - but I believe we’ll get there 🩵 Big dreams take you far!

If you’ve got a dream you want to chase, this is your sign to go for it. Here’s to big bold goals, and the courage to chase them! ⚡️✨
