130th Boston Marathon

It’s the day after Marathon Monday, and I still feel like I can’t adequately express this past 48 hrs.

This city gets behind the marathon like nothing I have ever seen before. I’ve had random people on the street ask if I ran, congratulate me when they find out I did, and even ask my time - to which the most common reply is “you beat Chara!” They do love their hockey here, and especially their Bruins, so I guess that’s a win? 😆

The race day logistics were fascinating to witness. The sheer challenge of moving that many people out to Hopkinton just to have them run back in is awe-inspiring. So many volunteers everywhere! If you follow me on Strava you may have read about a bit of a snafu at bus loading - while not the best way to start my personal journey, I understand the motivation behind attempting improvements, and hope they can learn from this for next year.

As for the race itself - because I missed my wave and had to jump in with the next one, I didn’t get a decent warmup and that hurt me once we hit the Newton hills. I spent the last 30k convinced my right calf was going to cramp, and my left IT band did not like the downhills at all, complaining bitterly once we got up and over Heartbreak. ❤️‍🩹 It was all I could do to maintain a 4:30 pace down Beacon, through the throng of screaming spectators and around the famous “right on Hereford, left on Boylston” that leads to the finish. In hindsight, metering my effort a bit more in the first half could’ve led to a more even split (1:33/1:42).

Having said that - I’m far from disappointed! I truly felt like I left it all out there, and that was the most I was capable of on the day given the circumstances. Would I have liked to go faster than 3:15? Of course. Am I still proud of my effort? Absolutely. After all, I still BQ’d at Boston!

The advantage of getting your teenager a phone is that he can capture the finish 🎥😆😤

3:07:25 for 5th in M50 and 118th OA at the @runvictoriamarathon today. Sorry about the salty language, but I was fired up 😉

Special thanks to the fam for making the trek down to see me finish. Meant a lot to have them there. ❤️

With a new year comes new goals to chase, and I’m excited to announce that I’ve been selected to be an @athleticbrewing Ambassador for 2024!

As many of you know, I was in the craft beer business for the last 8 years, and throughout that time I had a front row seat to the rise of the NA beer segment. Technically, it’s a tricky bit of work to produce a flavourful beer without any alcohol, but the benefits are there from a market perspective - it’s the fastest growing industry segment.

As an athlete, I appreciate being able to enjoy a tasty post-workout beverage without the side effects of alcohol. There are many NA beers out there and I’ve tried just about all of them, and I have to say that Athletic’s offerings are my favourite.

So what does this mean? Well, if you run with me, expect to see more Athletic NA beer showing up. I may also explore partnering with some of our local run crews and clubs on bringing their products to you. And of course, I will be sharing promo codes so that you can get your hands on some of these brews. But most of all, I’m looking forward to getting outside, running and sharing post-run Athletic brews with lots of you hooligans. 🍻✌🏼

Here’s to 2024 - Cheers! 🍻

Eastside 10k recap 💥
39:47 chip, 40:01 gun (lol)
6th M50, 129 OA

Didn’t have a huge set of expectations going into this one, but an almost perfect morning for running was too good to resist. Locked in on the 40’ pacers (big props to @semagwiji for an outstanding job 🙌🏼) with a solid crew, and we grinded it out. Took turns leading out, encouraging each other and bringing it home for the Eastside.

Events like this are why I love racing - @runcrswest and @ryanmeatysauce create the atmosphere for a bunch of strangers to come together, bond over shared misery and tackle hard things. Like that hill.

Onto @runvictoriamarathon in a few short days - I’ll be racing the 8k and will be done early, so if you’re in the half or marathon let me know and I will cheer accordingly… 🗣️📣🥳🦃

For @prairieinnharriers and all #yyj runners,

Join us on Sunday at 8:00 AM. 😍

We are running from the first parking lot on Sooke River Road after the turnoff from Sooke HWY #14, on the right. We will run to Leechtown and back (people can run shorter). It is 12.5 km, very gently uphill on the way out and therefore 12.5 km gently downhill. Some of us are going easy out and hard and fast back, some not.

Potential optional breaky on the drive returning to town.

Carpooling is happening; meet at 7:15 AM at the Helmcken Park 'n Ride.

Washing the EVOs only dilutes the rizz. Or something.

Always appreciate German visitors who bring running socks. Do they know me, or what?

Solid 20k this morning on Father’s Day, and the summer solstice (more or less).

I enjoy solo runs because they give me time to think - to make plans for the future, ruminate on lessons learned and things I can do better, and to express my internal gratitude for the life we lead. I do my best to not take it for granted.

Happy Father’s Day to all my fellow dads, but also to those widows, single parent households, grandparents raising their grandkids, and all those putting in the hard work of raising our next generation.

We interrupt this Global Running Day to bring you…a beer post. 🍻

When @c12beer releases their Hefeweizen, all the beer nerds make a beeline (seriously, my group chat was blowing up). Hefe the way it’s supposed to be, with beautiful mouthfeel, big wheat body and a ton of clove and banana on the nose. Brings back fond Bavarian memories. Prost!

Just a small sampling from today’s run up and down the sublime trails on Mt Geoffrey. No video, unfortunately - I needed to concentrate on foot placement (no yard sales, please).
