A little life recap. 🖤

Today was supposed to be a 26-mile run day. That’s not happening.

In fact, I haven’t run since September 26, when I got in 4 easy miles. I had no idea that would be my last run for a while.

The next morning, I woke up with body aches that I assumed were generalized soreness from all the training I’d been putting in. I went to work, took my pages, and by midafternoon, I had full-blown chills and a fever of 101°F.

Monday was a cycle of chills, persistent fevers, night sweats, and a low-grade headache. Acetaminophen and ibuprofen kept things somewhat manageable, but nothing was resolving. I tested negative for COVID, RSV, and influenza twice. I let work know I was sick and rearranged my schedule to accommodate video visits.

Tuesday, I saw patients virtually while rotating antipyretics around the clock. Then my fever climbed to 103°F, and my headache progressively worsened. By the end of the day, I was in the ER with the worst headache of my life and a fever that wouldn’t break. I was admitted that night.

The workup began. Head CT. Abdominal CT. Lumbar puncture. Bloodwork. Test after test, with no clear answer. Fever of unknown origin.
Over the following days came more testing for dengue, tick-borne illnesses, and autoimmune conditions, along with consultations from infectious disease and neurology.
The eventual working diagnosis? Aseptic meningitis, most likely caused by West Nile virus.

My fever finally broke on Friday, but the head pain was relentless. After round-the-clock opioids, migraine cocktails, and supportive care, neurology ultimately performed nerve blocks that made the pain more manageable.
I was finally discharged the following Tuesday, eight days after being admitted.

Being home hasn’t meant an immediate recovery. The days have been unpredictable, ranging from manageable to absolutely miserable. I’m still dealing with significant head pain, photophobia, lightheadedness, dizziness, and occasional nausea. I’m managing what I can with medication and trying to give my body the time it needs to recover.

Mogollan Monster 42k 9/13/26
27 miles of technical trail, mud, heat, 4,800+ feet of climbing… and I loved almost every minute of it. 👹⛰️

This is a seriously technical course. Rocks, roots, off-camber trail, steep ups and downs and after a big rainstorm rolled through, parts of the trail turned into an absolute slushy mess.
Typical, type 2 FUN.

I got to put my poles to good use and learned a lot about efficiency and how much energy you can save when you actually know how to use them.

The race starts at 7 AM from Pine Trailhead and the 42K shares about the final 24 miles of the 100-mile course, so you get to experience a pretty special part of the race: running alongside the 100 mile monsters.

And THAT was one of my favorite parts.

Spendinf miles with the100-mile runners after they had already climbed >12k feet and STILL MOVINGwas incredibly inspiring.

The weather started out absolutely perfect, but it got hot and humid later in the day. The aid stations were stocked with everything you could want, and the ice was a welcome reprieve. 🧊

I was so happy to see familiar faces out there and especially grateful to share miles with two of my badass lady friends. 🫶🏽

We stayed at Kohl’s Ranch before the race, which was the perfect little mountain respite before race morning. Quiet, beautiful, and exactly what we needed.

If you’re thinking about putting Mogollon Monster on your race calendar: come prepared for technical terrain, big elevation, changing weather, and a course that will make you work.

But if you love trails, beautiful Arizona country, and a little suffering…

Put this one on your list. 👹

Training can be tough sometimes. Life can be lifing.

My goal is to always show up the best way that I can and stay grateful for the process. I’m a firm believer that the journey to the finish line is just as important as the race day events and crossing the finish line. That sometimes looks like getting late miles in the AZ heat. 🔥.

Also, running in the heat is no joke. Be prepared, have support/hydration, proper cooling gear and stay humble. If the heat says it’s time to call it early, call the run. There’s always another day to put in the miles.

Keep showing up. Keep moving forward. And be grateful you get to do it. 🏃🏽‍♀️🌵

I wanted a 🛖 YurtCation for my birthday and that’s what I got ❤️🫰🏽. 10/10 Recommend.

📍Durango, CO

We were right next to the Animas River and I soaked up every minute of the mountain air that I could.

Weekends are for adventurous long runs. We got just a little lost, part of the trail was under water but we eventually found the bridge. Got to see a beautiful Green Mojave Rattler 🐍 and had views for days.

10/10 would recommend.
