This is the best starting point for planning out a week of running.

If you’re finding that you’re not recovering in time for the next speed session or long run, add another day of easy running in between. If it’s still not enough you could make it a shorter easy run or total rest. Cycles don’t need to be 7 days long. Try a 9 day cycle. But remember that frequency matters. More often is great, even if they’re shorter runs.

The only thing I’m good at is seeing patterns.

When you find the thing that works for you, do more of it. Sleep, coffee, carbs, and tempo work with good technique goes a long way to guaranteeing a good session for me.

If you’re a fan of training zones (pace, heart rate, power, whatever) make sure you know the durations that go along with each zone. Because 4 minutes in zone 5 might bury you but 4 minutes in zone 2 is a complete fucking waste of your time.

A better approach is to build a power duration curve that gives you both time and intensity and it’s built off your own abilities rather than an average of a bunch of people in a lab.

Getting a training plan from a coach is one small part of the value you’re paying for. Applying that plan to the nuance of your own life and your unique circumstances is where the value truly lies.

Last week I pitched a start up to investors and judges.

It was the end of a 5 week medtech and sporttech incubator at @rmitactivator and I absolutely loved it. We turned an idea (accessible data-driven running tools, of course!) into a concept I could pitch.

The night went really well and plenty of people were interested in the concept, which is a commoditised version of my coaching. It assigns metrics to the different physiological characteristics you need to build for a strong marathon, then shows you what you need to change in your training to achieve that. It’s based entirely off your own training numbers.

I feel like running power meters are not catching on because people are using them as just another measure of intensity. If you're not using a power-duration curve, it's a waste.

Training data also includes technique-based movements and can be very useful alongside fitness-based data.

@junkyarddog_run has focused his attention on reducing ground contact time, and has become stronger over the build which increased leg spring stiffness which means that his running effectiveness (how well he turns power into speed) has improved.

Basically, he can cover more ground for the same effort than he did 3 months ago. by @runpowercoach

I don’t think there’s enough discussion around expected weather in race selection. Part of the demands of a race include the environment and I know I’ve been guilty of only giving it a passing comment. How much do you factor in expected race day weather in your planning and training? by @runpowercoach
