Running a marathon was never a goal .. it was an intrusive thought at 4am that has now changed my life.

For the past 8 months i have been healing and i didn’t know i needed to — during the race i had a moment that i wasn’t just running for 33 year old Brooke, but i was running for:

🩷18 year old Brooke who started running in college to burn calories to lose weight

🩷20 year old Brooke who had a terrible relationship with food and then abused running

🩷24 and 28 year old Brooke who would train for a half marathon, run the race and stop running for years following .. just to do it again

🩷29 year old Brooke who used 2 mile runs as her outlet to get out of her own head

🩷31 year old Brooke who decided to not stop running after completing her 5th half marathon

🩷32 year old Brooke who finally ran a half marathon in under 2 hours — 12 years after setting that goal

🩷33 year old Brooke who has FINALLY made the mental connection that if she wants to run well she has to fuel well

🩷and finally two weeks ago Brooke who has struggled for years fully trusting God but decided last minute she needed Him in her race prep.

I realized i was running for that Brooke and it was the most magical 3 hours and 41 minutes of my life because while i was running — i realized i was healing.

the coolest part of all of this — is that it’s just the beginning.

I can’t WAIT to see how much better my mind, my body, my spirit will get over the next few years.

Running has given me so much and one thing i can give back is to keep showing up🩷🏃🏽‍♀️

🩷CHICAGO MARATHON 2026🩷

Not the race I had trained for but was reminded how incredible this sport is.

One aspect of marathon running is preparing your legs, heart and lungs to chase the PR’s, push limits and to see how strong you are

The other aspect of marathon running is preparing your mind to be able to execute when things go right and adjust when things go south.

Things definitely went south battling an upset stomach starting around mile 11, a frantic bathroom stop at mile 15 and slight dry heaving after each little sip of my gels in the miles moving forward. Also stepping on a bottle and about taking out my ankle around mile 22 had me saying some choice words + a myriad of rookie mistakes made before the race even started (hello you would have thought this was my first marathon not my 7th) annnddd are we acknowledging the heat or acting like that was normal and expected?😅

Alllll of that to say, how lucky am i to have a body that is strong enough to run 26.2 miles and a mind that can get me to the finish line no matter the circumstances.

I love running.
I love marathons.
