Falls du gerade mit einer Verletzung struggelst: I feel you.

NYC Marathon - A day I will never forget!

Thank you New York for cheering for all of the runners today. You were amazing! Things got tough for me at Kilometer 35, but you carried me all the way through Central Park to the finish line 🗽🏅

For training, I used @trackclubbabe 's Fast Marathon training plan. Even though my training was interrupted by injury, I still managed to run a huge marathon PR with this plan. I really recommend @trackclubbabe 's training programs!🏃‍♀️🏃

Congratulations to all the NYC Marathon finishers 🗽🏅❤️

Instead of running the 50th anniversary of the Berlin Marathon myself, I attended as a volunteer for the first time! It was a beautiful experience to support the runners by providing them with water cups along the marathon course 🥤🏃🏃‍♀️🏅

One thing I learned in marathon training recently: FLEXIBILITY is so important if you want to make it to the start line!

Before training for a marathon, I would do most of my runs as planned, even when my legs didn't feel so fresh. But in the last few months, I've learned that this doesn't work for me in marathon training with all the hard training my body has to take.
So, after feeling a slight tightness in my left calf after a tempo run on Thursday, I decided to do my "Longrun" today on the bike. I don't enjoy cycling too much and would have loved to run instead, but sometimes you have to adjust your training in favor of your health.

4 weeks left until NYC Marathon 🤯

Jokes aside, I've been going on more bike rides lately because I just can't run as much as I would like for my marathon training as I came back from injury a few weeks ago. In doing so, I’ve noticed that as a runner, you sometimes really have to be flexible when things don’t go as planned, for example like in my case, due to an injury. That can be really exhausting at times. But if you end up making it to the start line healthy and well-prepared, you know that the months of not only hard but also smart work have paid off!

One of my favorite quotes describes this insight very well:
"If you really want to do something you’ll find a way. If you don’t, you’ll find an excuse.” – Jim Rohn

“The only impossible journey is the one you never begin.” - Tony Robbins

When I started running in 2022, I had no idea where this journey would take me. After not having done any sports for a few years, I started running in January 2022 to get a bit fitter again. It didn’t take long for me to realize that running gave me more than just the fitness I had hoped for: Above all, it brought me so much joy from the very beginning that a few weeks later, I signed up for a small running event near me that I had heard about by chance. And from that point on, a journey began that I would have never thought possible for myself just a few months earlier:

- Summer 2022: Training for my first half marathon

- October 2022: Running my first half marathon, and shortly after signing up for my first full marathon for the following year

- September 2023: Running my first marathon

- January 2024: Registering for the New York Marathon in November 2024

If someone had told me in January 2022, when I was going out once a week to run and move a bit, that I would be looking into how to participate in the New York Marathon 2024 exactly two years later, I wouldn't have believed it myself. I wouldn’t have believed that I would ever be able to run more than 10 kilometers at a stretch, let alone a half marathon or a full marathon! But as they say: A journey is only impossible if you never start it. So: Get out there, do what you've always wanted to do, and believe in yourself! You never know where the path might lead once you’re on it.

"Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything."
- George Bernard Shaw

In the beginning, it was hard to accept that my training for @nycmarathon wouldn't look like I had expected. But I soon realized that if I didn't change anything about my training and simply start running again just like before my injury, with all the runs required for marathon training, it would only be a matter of time until injury strikes again.
So when I finally could start running again 2 weeks ago, I decided to give myself time and listen to my body more. The one major thing I've learned from being injured for the first time in years is to listen to my body and the signals it gives me more carefully!

Now I have a warmup routine before EVERY run I do. In my runs, I only run intervals of 10-15 minutes at the moment and take walking breaks every time I feel like I need to. I try to see the bigger picture and focus on time on feet, no matter if I run or walk it.

Being patient is not always easy, but it's worth it! The fitness is coming back slowly and it gets better with every run I do. The goal I keep in mind is to be able to finish the @nycmarathon in November and stay INJURY FREE. If that means I can only train as much to run half of the @nycmarathon and walk the other half, then so be it. My number 1 priority is to stay healthy and be able to run races again, even after the @nycmarathon.

I think that during the two months of being injured and not be able to run, I changed my mind about my running, my training, and where I really want to be with it. For me, it's no longer just about finishing this marathon I've wanted to participate in for so long, but also about being able to run and stay healthy for the rest of my life.
It was difficult to accept that my setback meant taking a step back and likely not being able to fully train as before again until next year. However, I now feel that this was an important lesson I needed to learn in order to stay healthy in the long run when it comes to running. I feel that this was progress to me.

Hey, I'm Melissa and have just started to document my running journey 🏃‍♀️🏅 Currently I'm coming back from an injury and trying to train for the 2024 @nycmarathon 🗽 I'm still not sure if I can rebuild my fitness by then, since there are only 3 months left 😳

I enjoy running longer distances, especially the marathon, at a slower pace. On Instagram, I have seen so many runners documenting their training and races. Often, these are very ambitious and especially fast runners, which intimidated me as a slower runner for a long time. Even though you hear it from almost everybody in the running community "Don't compare yourself to others, especially your racing results. Everyone's different", I find it very difficult not to do so. It's only human to compare yourself to others from time to time, especially on social media. And then you ask yourself: If all the other runners here on Instagram can run a marathon in under 4 hours, why can't I (yet)? Am I maybe doing something 'wrong'? And that is exactly why I have decided (after hesitating for a long time) to document my running journey here. Even if someone is (still) not able to run such a long distance as the marathon in a specific time, they still put just as much sweat, blood, and tears into the training and the race itself, as someone who is training for a specific target time. And it remains a great achievement for yourself when you have accomplished it.

I would be happy if you would like to follow my journey to the New York City Marathon and beyond 🤞🗽🏅 by @runwithme.lissa

Running can be hard sometimes. You set goals, train for a certain distance or race for weeks and months, without the certainty that everything goes according to the plan you've made in your head without anything getting in the way: illness, injury, or other unforeseen events. My injury during the training for the @nycmarathon made me more aware that life can always come in between, often when you expect it least. On my account, I want to share my running journey to hopefully running a marathon again one day, with everything coming in between and how to deal with such setbacks.

I'd be happy if you liked to follow my journey to the New York City Marathon and beyond 🤞🗽🏅
