Oscar-winner Sean Baker and film exhibition historian Ross Melnick will join me for a discussion after the screening of my film The Last Picture Shows (NY Times Critics pick, 85 on Metacritic, 100% Rotten Tomatoes) on Monday, October, 19 at 7:30. As Ross says in my film, "If you don't create the moviegoing experience for children and young adults, they don't develop that habit and they'll never pick it up. You can't miss what you don't know." Ross Melnick, film historian and author, has a line in my film where he describes the movie theater as a place where everyone has the same experience, whether "you're the mayor, or the farmer." It may be one of the last egalitarian spaces in America. Everyone pays the same for a ticket, munches the same popcorn, sits in identical seats, and watches the same film with the same audio. Ross will be joining me and Oscar-winning director of "Anora," Sean Baker, on October 19th at the Laemmle NoHo 7 for a post-film discussion of the importance and future of independent movie theaters and the moviegoing experience.
