Part-2

The 'Mental Load' and the 'Bare Minimum'

You've all heard the phrases right?

A two part video where I try and explain what those two things are, how they impact wives, partners, the mothers of our children - and what men can do to try to reduce that load, increase our participation in the running of our families, and most importantly, not add to the load.

The load is immense, most of it is hidden and not appreciated, and men, in general, do very little to help alleviate that.

I'm not pretending to have all the answers, nor am I smashing it. I'm aware of it, I'm aware what part I have played in the past, I'm taking responsibility and ownership and know where I want to be in the future.

To any men who watch this, don't be defensive and absolutely don't go to your partner and say "I want to help, can you make me a list".

Go to your partner, ask them to explain what load they are carrying, listen to them without making it a competition and be honest about what part you are playing, show empathy, understanding and then take some time decide how you can help, don't make her do that work for you.

Check out my two part reel which explains what they mean, you'll learn more about all the hidden work that makes up that mental load and what we, as men, need to be doing to support our partners more.

Let's also not forget that on top of the mental load, the physical acts of cooking, cleaning and childcare are being taken care of too.

When our wives and mothers of our children find time to enjoy life, an evening out or a weekend away with her friends - all this doesn't stop, it's there with her while she's away and it's still there when she gets back.

To the women out there on Insta!

Sunday 4th October - Garden Trap episode.

Very clear skies and a chilly night but some great moths!

Poole Dorset VC9.

A few first timers in the trap so it's always good to be able to tick a few more of the list.

Feathered Ranunculus continues to be the most abundant over the last few weeks.

Friday 25th September Garden Trap episode.

A full moon and clear skies resulted in a quiet night in Poole Dorset VC9.

Moth of the night was a Vestal as I've not trapped one before and pink is one of Darcey's fav colours. (Along with Purple) so we were both happy to see one.

Garden Moth Trap - Monday 21st Sept 2026

Poole, Dorset. VC9

A dry night clear night initially but then clouded over and we saw some heavy might, very fine rain come in during the early morning coming up to sunrise.

Fairly low numbers but a few interesting moths in the trap with one 'first' for me too - a Lunar Underwing.

Garden Moth Trap - Friday 18th Sept 2026

Poole, Dorset. VC9

A pretty wet night despite the Met Office showing it was going to be dry. Overcast and breezy too.

Yellow Underwings in their various forms continue to turn up in the trap in higher numbers than anything else, but a few others paid a visit too on this very wet night.

Exploring my garden UV light moth trap.

Monday 14th Sept 2026, Poole Dorset VC9

On Monday night I lit up my UV Moth Trap in my garden in Parkstone.

As has been the case for the last few weeks Large Yellow Underwings have been the dominant species making their way into the trap with over 50 in there last night.

A few other pretty cool moths in there too though, check out my video and see.

Garden Trap - Thurs 20th Aug
Poole, Dorset VC9

A quiet night in the trap last night, dry, overcast, a bit chilly though I thought.

17 moths / 12 different species.

Three Straw Underwings plus couple of Vine's Rustic, the rest were single specimens.

Show stoppers of the evening - Pale Prominent and Tree Lichen Beauty
