Last night I had the amazing opportunity to attend @oceana ‘s 19th annual SeaChange Summer party, where some of my work was put on display for 350 philanthropists, activists, leaders, and celebrities who showed up for the event.

When I sent them my footage, I wasn’t sure how much they would use or how long it would be displayed for, as there was also other footage from different videographers.

In a very surreal moment, I watched the first speaker of the night take the stage and start speaking of our coastline. Lo and behold, the first video they played was not only mine, but one of my favorites I have taken in our kelp forests (the last few seconds of this can be seen in the last slide). To say the moment was special was an understatement.

Contributing even to some very small part of an event that raised $1.7 million dollars in just a few hours of a single night, all of it going toward the ocean and its protection, was one of the coolest things my footage has ever done. And seeing people from shows and movies I grew up watching watch it a few tables over from me was something else.

Thank you to @oceana for putting on such an awesome event, I’m happy I was able to be a part of it.

One of my favorite fish to see is the Giant Kelpfish, mostly due to how hard they can be to find due to their camouflage abilities.

Most times that I see them it’s because they ventured out and away from the kelp or seagrass they were hiding in and their colors haven’t shifted to match their background, as can be seen in the first clip. They are also the only living species classified within their genus. Such awesome creatures.

Leopard Sharks may be one of the smaller and less “dangerous” shark species to humans but they don’t always act like it. Most of the time they steer way clear of you, but every once in a while you get one like this who locks onto you. You can feel it in the water-the direct, fast, confident swim toward you, the sudden turn right next to your face, the held eye contact, and the sporadic swimming away. Despite being harmless to humans, they still manage to get my heart rate up once in a while when they really show the power of their confidence and speed. Really cool to see them in their full force. If you find a Leopard Shark doing this to you repeatedly, best to swim away and let them be.

Zebra Perch generally feed on kelp and algae in the shallows. When a school of juveniles finds a good place to stop and eat, they must be wary of other larger fish that have already claimed the spot as their own. In these two videos, the same school can be seen getting chased out of a zone by two separate older Zebra Perch. In the second instance, the adult perch even opens its mouth to try to bite or intimidate one of the younger perch.

Oftentimes I see them constantly moving from one spot to another as they are chased out of areas by bigger fish. I’ve also found them in spots without any harassment from other fish, earning a temporary break from the constant threat of competition.

Moments like these blur the line between dream and reality. Harbor Seals always remind me that there is something beyond us we don’t fully understand.

Watching this school of young Zebra Perch eat and navigate the waves on a choppy day was pretty awesome. Seeing how they moved along the reef with the waves but always came back to one singular unit time and time again was pretty mesmerizing.

Even a slight movement can scare off a lot of marine wildlife. It’s best to remain still and calm. That way you can see some pretty cool scenes unfold in front of you while not scaring off wildlife. A fly on the wall, or maybe in this case a sea star on a rock.

I was on a dive recently with @reel_swim_shady_ when this Leopard Shark zoomed past me with a hunched back. It wasn’t until I looked at the footage after I got home that I realized this was what I’m pretty sure was a Leopard Shark giving birth.

I have been trying to find a video of a Leopard Shark birth in the wild but to my knowledge none exist unless I have missed something floating around out there.

@scripps_ocean Take a look and let me know what you think.

Given the location, the amount of small Leopard Sharks around the area, the warm water, and the footage, my gut is telling me that’s what it was. But curious if anyone has anything to say/show me.

Hung around these guys for a while. Between the unison of their movements and the colors of the reef, and the rapid pecks and tears at the kelp they were eating, it was a pretty cool sight. Every so often a bigger perch would come chase them away, and they’d disperse the come back together and start eating again.

I was at the bottom when this Harbor Seal approached from somewhere on his travels and swam by to check out what was going on. He decided to turn into a patch of Eelgrass and then continue toward my camera which he checked out for a few seconds.

Element of the surprise, maybe just a little too late.
