My summer of island adventures wound up this week with a trip to @burghislandhotel off the coast of Devon, where I was invited to stay for a few days as a writer in residence at their stunning art deco island hotel.

I ate, drank, read and wrote, and hosted a delicious afternoon tea event where I spoke about my love of remote, island settings and why Burgh Island is the perfect place for a crime writer! Truly a dreamy end to a lovely summer ❤️ by @ruthwarewriter

A little photo dump from my summer holidays!

The brief was somewhere interesting, with an escape from the heat of southern England, and Iceland delivered perfectly with sweater-friendly weather and truly jaw-dropping scenery.

I had visited once before (with Iceland Noir - definitely a festival crime-lovers need to attend at least once!) but that was in the winter, so this was a chance to hire a car and go further afield.

We started off in the Jökulsárlón national park, which is a giant confluence of glaciers ending in an ice lagoon, and put on our crampons to go glacier hiking and ice-caving.

Then we drove along the south coast via Reynisfjara beach and the Seljalandsfoss waterfall, before taking our hire car over some truly terrifying potholes to visit the Icelandic highlands, where we stayed at the Highland Base Camp and went exploring in the Kerlingarfjöll volcanic mountains. With the red rocks and constant bubbling steam and sulphur, it felt and looked like something out of Star Wars.

Finally we wound back to Reykjavik via Strokkur geyser, Gullfoss waterfall and the Þingvellir - the ancient national parliament of Ireland which sits atop two continental plates - you can literally step from Europe to America in one stride.

In Reykjavik we visited museums (which is where the terrifying cat photo comes from), ate some absolutely divine food (including one of the best vegan restaurants I've been to all year - Mama Reykjavik) and had coffee with the brilliant Icelandic crime writer @ragnarjo - I got extreme office envy as his office is much nicer than mine and I was instantly convinced I could write many more books if I had one as aesthetically pleasing with my own ceramic stove.

I also did a little field research for my next book which you can see in the final pic - I'm not going to tell you how terrifying Halloween folk masks feature, you'll have to wait and find out!

Hope your summer is equally fun - let me know what you're reading! by @ruthwarewriter

To the Glenburn Hotel on the Isle of Bute for the brilliant Bute Noir festival!

Syrian breakfast at the gorgeous Cafe Tazza - the white noodle-looking plate is cheese and the whole thing was delicious (hence why I ate about half before remembering to photograph it)

Obligatory pilgrimage to the world's fanciest public toilets... swipe right for the full glory

Tada! I had to wait until all the men had left to take this photo so I hope you appreciate it (the women's side was more boring)

Big skies

Invading Bute castle

I was menaced by a seagull who rapped on my hotel window if I didn't look sufficiently interested in him or tried to leave

Amazing 1950s shops

Delicious dinner at a Polish restaurant called the Waterfront. The owner is a restaurateur in the summer and a criminologist in the winter so above the bar was a constantly rotating PowerPoint about criminology.

Speaking with @erinjelly on the Saturday night. The talks were fantastic - I particularly enjoyed Erin and @harriet_tyce, and @liznugentwriter and @louisecandlish with @heatherjfitt .

On the ferry home with @liznugentwriter

Back on the mainland at the magnificent Wemyss Bay station - then homeward bound back to the 32⁰c heat of Sussex! by @ruthwarewriter

Locked-room mysteries have a habit of finding their way back to Burgh Island 📚

On 1st September, we're delighted to welcome internationally bestselling author Ruth Ware for an afternoon of conversation and traditional Afternoon Tea.

Often described as 'the Agatha Christie of our time', Ruth will share her fascination with island settings, luxury hotels and the lasting influence Christie has had on her work.

There are few places more fitting for a conversation about mystery.

This was SUCH a hard ask - I could have listed 50 books and still not named all the ones I thought deserved a mention - I would have loved to include Fingersmith, The Dry, or Slow Horses for example.

So this top ten is somewhat arbitrary, but they are all cracking books and you can read the @nytimes' top fifty here: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2026/books/best-thriller-books-21st-century.html?unlocked_article_code=1.21A.1-xU.q5wtTGbpIVKs by @ruthwarewriter

Back from the absolute joy of @harrogatefestivals Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival, expertly chaired by @lisajewelluk.

The whole weekend was magical but a few highlights were The Man About The House panel with @markedwardsauthor and @johnmarrs.author, @ellygriffiths17 winning the Crime Novel of the Year, excellent T-shirt game from @clairemcgowanwriter and @edjamesauthor, hanging with author pals including lovely @sharilapena who was celebrating her ten book anniversary, and of course THE BOOKS.

I also had a blast speaking on the Christie panel with @lucyfoleyauthor, @ragnarjo and @mossmontmomery under the watchful eye of the @quineofcrime herself, Val McDermid. You can just about make us out in pic 3 if you squint.

As usually I didn't take enough photos so pics 3, 5 and 6 are stolen from @janecaseyauthor @annamazzolawriter and @cltaylorauthor.

Final pic is your very tired and happy author trying to caffeinate away the exhaustion on the train back home.

Harrogate forever! ❤️ by @ruthwarewriter
