2013 Canon-La-Gaffelière: the forbidden vintage. Deep ruby in the glass with some bricking at the edge. Deep and concentrated nose of baked strawberries and raspberries, red licorice, Chinese five-spice, cedar box, woodsmoke, and graphite. Medium + body on the palate with only a faint hint of powdery tannin left, medium + acidity, seamless flavors, and a red grapefruit tinged finish with excellent length. Definitely an exercise in producer over vintage, but totally unsurprising from this label. 2005 still stands as my favorite CLG vintage, but this is a great homage. Excellent drinking claret. Great end to the summer.

Quick photo dump from the last month or so. Haven’t posted in ages outside of stories. What a different world we live in these days. Have seen wine prices skyrocket in the last year so have pulled back drinking. Moreso in save mode now, focusing on value plays for drinking. Really came into focus recently after seeing current vintage Cristal top $450/bottle, and Dom go north of $350/bottle up here. Our local government run liquor monopoly taking full advantage. Anyone else feeling the crunch on wine prices?

2008 Dom Perignon Rosé: concentrated strawberry mousse and mandarin orange aromas lead the way with roses, flint, gravel, and toasty brioche woven throughout the expressive nose. Full bodied and incredibly well balanced, the palate is in perfect harmony with a very delicate mousse and well integrated acidity. The finish is exceptionally long and leaves a lasting salinity. This will undoubtedly continue to develop in the long term but is absolutely beautiful right now. Many parallels to the 2008 brut in terms of depth and complexity. Good luck keeping your hands off these!

1990 Chateau Lynch-Bages: this was an absolutely spectacular example of LB and of Pauillac in general. Drop dead nose that took its sweet time to show itself fully (decanting is still recommended) but full of intense crème de cassis, graphite pencil, exotic spices, old leather, sous-bois, sweet tobacco, mint, charred wood and gravel. Medium to full bodied, this was all class on the palate. Everything in perfect harmony, and with a mid-palate to die for. The finish was extremely long, and the wine kept evolving in the glass over the evening. I haven't tried the 89 yet as a comparison, but it's near the top of my list. Shared with great friends

1989 Château Tertre Roteboeuf: this was just a textbook example of top quality right bank Bordeaux from an incredible vintage, firing on all cylinders. This elixir explodes from the glass with waves of macerated blackberry, confiture de cassis, pipe tobacco, cedar box, espresso, dark chocolate, graphite, limestone, and hickory. Full bodied and totally integrated on the palate with ample balancing acidity and a finish that lasts well past a minute. Absolutely stunning example and among my top Bordeaux tasted of all time. So happy to have shared it with great friends.

2014 Bollinger La Grande Année Rosé - Happy New Year to all! Didn’t make it to midnight for the third year running but the bubbles were definitely flowing. This LGA was a chaotic mess upon the first pour, but settled in and opened up nicely with air and some patience. A beautiful salmon color in the glass, the nose was very expressive and complex with pink grapefruit, fresh raspberries, strawberries and cream, brioche, hazelnuts, and flowers. The palate was quite tight, but mellowed out towards the end of the bottle. Beautiful line of acidity and a hint of woodsmoke on the finish. Still a young pup, but is destined for good things. Here’s to a peaceful and prosperous 2023!

1983 Errazuriz Don Maximiano Reserva: inaugural vintage for Errazuriz winemaker Eduardo Chadwick, this 100% cabernet sauvignon (Don Max is a Bordeaux blend these days) was said to be picked quite early; spending time in both concrete and barrique. 39 years later this is still a youthful affair on the palate but with a very feminine and soft nose of pomegranate, sour cherry, and pink grapefruit. Hits of fennel, caramel, cinnamon, and gravel unfurl in the glass slowly with air. It’s a classy affair and once again shows the prowess of Chilean winemaking. Great fun to taste and was enjoyed with my wife on her birthday (birth year wine for her)

2007 Mirafiore Lazzarito Barolo: always find it funny that I drink less of my favorite wine than pretty much everything else. This 2007 Lazzarito quickly reminded me of why I absolutely love a good Barolo. Super classic on the nose; concentrated wild strawberries, fresh flowers, black licorice, old leather, forest floor, caramel, and a hit of gravel. Full bodied and totally integrated on the palate with a beautiful line of acidity. Baked red berries, caramel, and licorice flavors linger on the finish for close to a minute. Beauty wine. Drink up.

2012 Château Léoville Barton: was a little hesitant to pop the cork on this one but so glad I did. This ‘12 is in a great early stage of development and absolutely ready to drink. Very intense and concentrated nose full of classic cassis and blackberry aromas with tons of graphite pencil, cedar box, roasting herbs, gravel, old leather and woodsmoke. Medium to full bodied on the palate with a great line of acidity and softened, but present tannins. The finish is easily into the 45 second range. Decanted for about 4 hours prior to drinking, but probably wasn’t necessary (half that would have been fine). A really enjoyable Barton and should be in a good spot for another 7-10 with room to grow.

2017 Marchand-Tawse Vosne-Romanee: really impressed with the approachability of the ‘17 Nuit reds I’ve had this year. This one is no exception with a concentrated and gorgeous nose full of fresh cranberry and raspberry, wet leaves and forest floor, gravel and woodsmoke. Medium to full bodied, the palate has excellent delineation and a powerful structure. Tannin and acid levels are right up the middle and the finish is long and complex. Really nice for a VR village wine, ready to go now with a upside of another 5-10 years.

2011 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne: Considering not many of the grande marques even declared a vintage in 2011, I was very interested to taste the Comtes de Champagne. Turns out Taittinger made the best of a tumultuous year and put forth a solid effort with this wine. Concentrated Amalfi lemon, crisp granny smith apple, and fresh pastry leads the expressive nose. Fresh cut flowers and crushed stones are there to support and cut all the way through to the finish. The palate is medium to full bodied with cool citrus fruits, racy acidity, a very delicate mousse, and a medium long finish. This is very enjoyable now and will no doubt be able to age into the medium term. Not destined for greatness by any means, but as a Tête de cuvée I think it checks all the boxes.

2002 Beringer Private Reserve: #tbt to this Napa beauty we enjoyed a few weeks ago. Already in a great spot to enjoy, the nose is intense and full of macerated blackberry and crème de cassis aromas with waves of cedar box, graphite, limestone gravel, and woodsmoke all fighting for your attention. The palate is full bodied and totally resolved with excellent balancing acidity and concentrated flavors of dried blackberries, cedar, and limestone. Very long finish. Excellent quality cab from a Napa legend.
