Piedmont’s second coming? 🤷🏼‍♂️

I first interviewed @philine_isabelle_dienger early last year, later publishing an article detailing her experience, formative years, ambitions, desires and more. We stayed in regular contact and have since become good friends. Her rapid success has been a sight to behold. Alas, all this means Philine’s wines are already difficult to come by—which is really quite remarkable considering the relative youth of her Piedmontese project.

Alongside several other producers (think @tomjhmyers, @lalu.wine, @fletcherwine, @simo.fiorino, to name a few), Philine represents a ‘second coming’ for Piedmont, a truly golden age of new and established producers reimagining what it is to make wine in Langhe. It’s never been more exciting to cover this region. I’ve got plenty more content on this topic to come on both my own website and elsewhere.

Whose Barbera should we be drinking? 🍇

Barbera has been cultivated in Piedmont since the thirteenth century. During the great diasporas, Italian immigrants brought Barbera to the Americas, planting vines in California and Argentina. In 1985, Piedmont was rocked by the methanol scandal; unscrupulous producers added methanol to their wines, killing more than 30 people. Associated bad press caused a steady decline in plantings.

Nevertheless, a year earlier Giacomo Bologna released his Bricco dell’Uccellone for the first time, followed by Bricco della Bigotta in 1990. Giacomo is generally recognised as the ‘father’ of modern Barbera. Albeit unusual, he harvested fruit—growing on south-facing slopes—later than his contemporaries, and aged his wine for 16 months in French barriques—perhaps inspired by Peynaud, who, in the 1970s, recommended Barbera producers use small oak barrels for fermentation and maturations.

Today, 20,000ha of Barbera are planted in Italy compared to 50,000 in the 1980s. Most Langhe producers now grow Barbera, including those established producers who have always remained committed to Langhe’s autochthonous varieties. For some, Barbera even achieves greater prices than Nebbiolo, a remarkable fact considering the varieties recent sketchy past.

Both bottles pictured opened over lunch at Vignaiolo, impossible not to indulge at these prices. 2015 Cappellano Vigna Gabutti Barbera d’Alba is in a pretty delicious place. Maraschino cherry, spice, balsamic and plum. Dense, structured and persistent palate. 2020 Giuseppe Rinaldi a little less open, perhaps in a premature, awkward phase.

Delicious Burgs over dinner at @voyage.singapore✨🍷

Benoit Ente Chassagne Montrachet 2016, fresh blooming fragrant white lilies, lime, stony minerals, balanced & rounded on the finish, v enjoyable👍

Jacky Truchot Chambolle Musigny les Sentiers 2004, ultra expressive & elegant on the nose, with layers of lavender, blueberries, sous bois, prominent hint of capsicum & herbaceous tones (which can be common amongst some Burgs from this vintage) emerged after 30mins in glass, always love Truchot’s Chambolles but this bott was performing just above average🍷

Thanks to L for the fab dinner🙏

1999 Chateau Haut Brion Blanc. Happy #throwbackthursday and this this wine that still has me grinning like an idiot. This wine was my WOTN from the most recent gathering of the Canadian Wine Hounds in TO and will likely finish in my top 3 for 2021. This bottle represents the third time I have tried this rare delight and I cannot convey with words how impressed I was. The nose had a lovely minerality with brush strokes of citrus. The palate was just as pleasing and was complimented by apple. To be truthful, I was much more focused on the wine than my tasting notes and just found myself captivated by its beauty and power. This wine was of outstanding quality and was the perfect addition to our evening. #wine #vin #wein #vino #winetime #wineoclock #winelover #winecountry #winestagram #instawine #sommelier #wineporn #winery #foodie #winetasting #instagood #travel #whitewine #champange #wines #wanderlust #winelovers #redwine #wine🍷 #citylife #bordeaux #winedown #tbt

STOP❓Question time!❓Do you remember that first case of wine you bought? Or first bottle you got after you thought, "🤔🤔🤔Hmmmm, I think I'm getting the wine bug!!" Share with us down below
⬇️⬇️
I first got into wine properly, around 3 or 4 years ago. a LOT has happened since then... It's been a ride😎😎
🍷🍷🍷
Initially, I had this massive obsession with really big, bold fruit bombs🔥🔥🔥, & spent countless hours scouring auction websites looking for wines to pick off & try.. The first of which was 12 of these @wildduckcreekestate Springflat Shiraz 04
😜😜
Here, its better stated by the wine maker himself, Dave Anderson who says..."About 40% new oak is used. It’s a nuts and bolts wine for the range. ‘We blend this wine before anything else; If we f*!k up this one, then don’t buy anything that year’,"
😂😂😂😂😂
I paid around £130 for a case at auction...maybe more, maybe less, doesn't really matter, but it was an absolute bargain...mostly it was like a graduation🎓🎓🎓 moment, from picking up the cheapest bottle I could find in supermarkets in previous years, to suddenly ordering wine to cellar & covet... Eureka❗❗
💡💡
Last week, I opened my last bottle.. R.I.P... It had given us solid drinking pleasure, albeit a little faded now in its upfront juicy fruit, but its been well worth the ride, so as I bid farewell to this case, its time to load up on the next .... USA, Burgundy.. Could be anything, & always with one eye on the aussie styles that drew me into wines clutches in the first place. Stay tuned 🍷🍷🍷
P. S this paired so well with Shakshuka, a lightly spiced Mediterranean, poached egg based dish in a sauce of tomato & other great things 🍅🍅🍅 no meat, it reminded a little of a mild curry, one thing I love shiraz with.. just shows, you don't always have to have a huge lump of meat with your aussie bombs
🥩
😇
Cheers everyone, happy long weekend

😎😎😎Happy Friday everyone... Let's forget burgundy & champagne for a minute... What's your FAVOURITE NEW WORLD CHARDONNAY PRODUCING COUNTRY? Hit me down below
⬇️⬇️⬇️🌍🌍🌍
Apparantly it's international #chardonnay day today so thought I'd get in on the act.......or was it yesterday? Does it matter? Been flat out with work recently despite the #covid19 crisis, wine sales never sleep, but the evening wines have been great
🍷🍷👍👍🌃🌃
I have a real soft spot for South Africa, especially the wines or @newtonjohnsonvineyards... This is the 2018 family vineyards chardonnay (from the upper Hemel en Aarde, & it never fails, they make great pinot too.. Its got a decent influence of oak, but it's surprisingly well balanced, joyous & citrusy, it's definitely on the bigger side, but the acidity cuts through, citrusy, buttery, honey 🍯🍯&peachy tones. Lovely .. It's a joy ... Highly recommended... It's very "alive" feeling, you must try it 👇👇👇🌍🌍
If you like your Chards big, bold and full of citrus & oaky influence, this is a winner
🥇🥇🥇
I had this pic set up on a timer, & as it went off, dad popped out onto the balcony, so excuse the lack of a perfect gaze, but hey, #instagramvsreality, and this was reality 😉😉😉😜😜😜
