🏵️ In last week's session, Neena shared a snippet of Parashakti; alumni choreography by her late guru, the trailblazing Menaka Thakkar. (Note: Music has been adapted for this clip).

Neena passes down her rich dance lineage and profound knowledge with immense care and dedication. Come learn, move, and connect with us at this Sunday's session!

: UPDATE: all shows are FREE entry, no ticket is needed to see the performance!

Friends in Toronto! ☀️

Please join us this week on Saturday July 25 or Sunday July 26 for a very special showing of “When Shakti Overpowers” ~ a Kalaripayatt & Dance Theatre production.

We will be performing a total of 6 shows over the weekend, and the show run time is approx 30 minutes 🌻

I’m excited & grateful to be sharing the stage with two dear friends for this rendition ~ brilliant artists & fellow warriors ~ Nidhi Baadkar @its_miss_masala and Rachana Joshi @rxchjoshi 💪🏾🙏🏽

This is a rare chance to see many traditional Kalaripayatt sequences performed in Toronto, in the beautiful setting of the courtyard of the Aga Khan Museum.

Kalaripayatt is one of the oldest martial art forms in the world (over 3000 years old). Known as the Mother of all martial arts, the practice originates from Kerala, South India.

This rendition of the piece also integrates elements of our shared movement practice in Contemporary dance, Bharatnatyam and Mayurbhanj Chhau.

We will be bringing all our energy & we hope to see you there! ☀️

TEJAS by Neena Jayarajan

FEB 12TH | 7:45PM
FEB 14TH | 7:00PM
FEB 15TH | 2:45PM

Catch us at the Ripe Fruit Festival, happening at Video Cabaret.

TEJAS- A Sanskrit word defined as brilliant, filled with fire, and intense power. Using the entirety of Bharatanatyam this work challenges the traditional aesthetic and perspectives of the technique, while also honouring its complexity. With care for the form and each other arises a storytelling journey where tradition meets the contemporary ultimately finding community. A work rooted in deep respect for the classical tradition, with reinterpretation of vocabulary, displacement of context and shifting presentation norms, all while evolving its boundaries. Tejas is storytelling, Community, and connection, in dynamic conversation. Aiming to isolate and elevate gesture, rhythm, emotion, and technique, revealing its full expressive range.

Choreographer: Neena Jayarajan
Music Composer: Ed Hanley
Outside Eye:Geneviève Beth Grady, Purawai Vyas, Arrthami Siva- Kuruvinth

Please welcome Rachana to our roster 🎉

Rachana teaches Bharatanatyam, Bollywood and Kirby.

Rachana Joshi is a dance artist and educator based in Tkaronto with over 20 years of training in Bharatanatyam under the mentorship of Lata Pada (CM). Following her arangetram in 2017, she joined Sampradaya Dance Academy as a teacher, guiding students through the technical and expressive depths of the form. As Artistic Director of Kala Dance Collective, Rachana launched Prep + Practice, a free community training initiative supporting Toronto-based Bharatanatyam dancers. Her teaching is informed by her diverse training, including modern techniques from York University’s BFA Dance program and by training, mentorship and workshops with artists such as Nova Bhattacharya, Seeta Patel, Atri Nundy and Priyadarshini Govind.
