POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

What do dinosaur bones, deep love of land and family, and remembrance of people and animals that have passed have in common? The last 3 North Dakota tile workshops in Bowman, Hettinger and Dickinson. I was so fortunate to make tiles with the @sternbergcamps kids at the @pioneertrailsmuseum as well as with artists @big_oakpress @caeciedeblaere @painternicole @tobiaszikmund @andreafagerstrom and Myra Klein. Thank you to all the North Dakotans who participated in these workshops. I can’t wait to incorporate your tiles into ”Hoodoo Herd,” the public art sculpture @sunmccolgin and I are making outside Medora next spring. The tile making workshops at Morton Mandan Public Library and D & N Cinematics generated many wonderful stories and tiles for Sun’s and my public art sculpture, “Hoodoo Herd,” to be completed in the Badlands of Medora spring of 2027. If you would like to hear the Tile makers’ stories please click the link in my Instagram bio. Thank you, Morton Mandan public library and D&N cinematics for hosting me and sharing your community. #ryahchristensenart #sunmccolginart #hoodooherd by @ryahchristensen

My third Tile workshop last week was at Dickinson State University. There were a lovely mix of students and community members there who made some beautiful tiles and told me some great stories. These workshops are all part of a larger community engagement process, during which I am collecting stories told in Clay across the state of North Dakota. Once these Clay tiles are fired, I will incorporate them into a large public art sculpture that @sunmccolgin and I are making in the Badlands of North Dakota. Many thanks to Dustin young for hosting me in his beautiful ceramic space. I had a wonderful time making tiles with the students and teachers at BSC in Bismarck, ND last week - one of many workshops during which I collected stories told in clay for “Hoodoo Herd,” a public art sculpture @sunmccolgin and I are making outside of Medora. Special thanks to Andrea Fagerstrom, John Geiser, and Sheila Sielski for hosting me and sharing their students. Also, thank you for firing these tiles! I had a blast making tiles and collecting stories for Sun’s and my upcoming Public Art sculpture, “Hoodoo Herd” with NDSU students and teachers last week. A very special thanks to David Swenson, head of NDSU ceramics, for mixing me the Hebron clay. And also thanks to Robin Reynolds for the schoolhouse red slip! It is lovely to be making these tiles out of North Dakota Clay for that extra special connection to the land. If you would like to hear people talking about their tiles, see the YouTube link in my bio. #ryahchristensenart #sunmccolginart #hoodooherd by @ryahchristensen
