Well Made Music is a true success story in American manufacturing, and in the music business generally.

The mastering studio originally started in Cleveland when, in 2010, founder Clint Holley bought a vintage Neumann VMS 70 lathe (widely considered among the best machines on earth). Clint was previously a live sound engineer, and he set up the Neumann in his mother-in-law's garage and taught himself how to use it. He soon became the go-to lacquer cutter for @gottagrooverecs. Then, a few years back, Clint moved the operation to Bristol, VA.

Well Made probably has more cutting lathes than just about any other mastering house in the country, with 3 (soon to be 4) units in operation.

In Bristol, I had the chance to tour the studio and interview Clint Holley for Episode 15 of the No Love Songs Music Business Podcast.

Don't mind the muddy undercarriage.

Funny story: I decided to change the transmission fluid in my van. Never did it before, but Dodge transmissions are supposedly notorious, so thought it was a good idea. Felt a bit nervous because transmissions seem scary. (Also don't like crawling under the car, so I stuck a cinder block under the frame just in case the jack stands failed.)

All went well until I took the car off the jack stands and tried to drive out of the driveway. TERRIBLE grinding sound and car wouldn't go. I assumed the worst. "I've somehow ruined my transmission!"

Nope. I just forgot to remove the cinder block, which was just the right height to allow the wheels on the ground but not to move the car.... 💀 After recovering from my heart attack I jacked up the car again, removed the block, and drove away just fine. It runs good.

Housewives were considered "the big obstacle" to increased TV sales in 1950, according to this article in Billboard Magazine.
