My Great-Great Grandfather on my mother’s side was a carpenter who built houses from the ground up. I have a couple books (1917) that belonged to him, which came down to me after I started my business. I don’t know too much about him, except that he was talented in his craft, and I think he came out of an Amish community in Elkhart, Indiana.

I was recently interviewed about my business, and I was talking about how I got into my craft. I think often, at least with me, we don’t really understand the reasoning behind our decisions until much later, and it’s like this with my path to woodworking. I knew pretty quickly after college that I was most comfortable working with my hands, and this led me into kitchens for awhile, and eventually to woodworking. I think this need to work with my hands has as much to do with genes as it does having learned instruments from a young age. I played saxophone for several years and then guitar, which I play to this day, and the longer I’m in this craft the more similarities I see between music and woodworking. Put another way, music is as much a geometry as that relied on in woodworking. Sand will make geometric patterns on a plate vibrating with sound.

Delivered a very cool white oak dining table yesterday to some long-time clients and friends. Checked in on a couple older pieces while there. It’s great to see how people are incorporating my work into their lives. All the wood from this build was sawn and dried by @yalobusha.kiln of locally sourced wood, so you know it’s the good stuff. by @ryan_pierce_woodworker
