8 DAYS TO GO 🏆 Here’s our eigth fabulous finalist, March slam winner RYAN BURLE 🎤 Ryan is a Chichester-based poet and performer whose work blends sharp humour with raw honesty, capturing the chaos, calm, and quiet beauty of being human. Co-founder and host of the Tongue Tied Poetry Slam, he’s also brought words to the water by producing Poets on the Canal with Chichester Fringe, and his poetry has featured on BBC Radio across the South. His street project, Poems for Strangers, sees him with a vintage 1960s typewriter, creating poems on the spot for anyone who asks. In 2024, he released his debut collection Write, Flight or Freeze, a heartfelt exploration of the fragility and wonder of life ❤️ @ryanbpoet

WHAT WILL HAPPEN AT THE FINAL?🏆
The 10 winners from this season’s poetry slams will perform poems in the sunshine at Brighton Open Air Theatre. Five lucky audience members will hold up scores and one poet will be crowned Hammer & Tongue Champion 2026! As the sun goes down, spoken word superstar, Kate Ireland, will treat us to a set of poetry under the stars. As always, Leanne Shorley will be your host with Ashton on scores ✨ Brighton Open Air Theatre is a beautiful outdoor amphitheatre - so please prepare for the British weather (sun cream & big coats advised). You’re more than welcome to bring picnics, blankets, prosecco, Pimm’s, crisps & dips (and there’s a wonderful bar run by volunteers with drinks and snacks). The venue is accessible. Please see the FAQ section of the @brightonopenairtheatre website for more info 🌞

Often, a couple of slammers can’t make it, so it’s definitely worth a go! If you are performing in the slam, please prepare an original poem of 3 minutes or less (no music, no props). Any style, any theme, anything you want! It doesn’t have to be memorised and you’re more than welcome to read from paper/your phone.

OMG IT’S UNPRECEDENTED! At last night’s slam, we had a three-way tie for first place 🤯 A massive congratulations to our trio of champions: TONY BELL 🥇 MIKEY CHAMBERS 🥇 RYAN BURLE 🥇 They’ll all be back to perform at next month’s slam on 7th April! AND they’ve all qualified for our Brighton Fringe Grand Final on 15th May at @brightonopenairtheatre 🏆 Three is the magic number! 🪄
