What does performing poetry at a UK festival look like?

This 👆🏻

It may have been the wettest, windiest day of the hottest summer on record – of course – but we had an absolute blast battling the elements with words and willpower at @victoriousfestival on Saturday!

I’m so grateful to have had this very cool opportunity thanks to @artfulscribeuk and @the_front_room_portsmouth 💜 at the @peopleslounge.

And I got to share the stage with:

@ellorarosesutton
@jacksondaviespoet
@stewtaylorpoet
@ryanbpoet
@themeowtriarchy
@anitafoxallpoetry
@sam.cox10
Ricky Tart
Matt West

After our set was up, I made the most of the day with one of my closest friends, and caught snippets of sets from White Lies, Kate Nash, Doves, Happy Mondays, Massaoke, and Nile Rodgers and Chic 🪩 with a pint of Thatchers Blood Orange firmly in hand.

What a day!

Thanks to everyone who stopped by.

It’s Shan! Drama teacher by day and poet whenever she finds the time, Shan is a Chichester-based poet with a passion for creative expression in all its forms.

Her poetry explores her experiences of being late-diagnosed ADHD/autistic, queer, and navigating womanhood.

Shan hopes her poetry helps others feel a little bit more seen, while also giving her the perfect excuse to say the things that really need to be said, and she’ll make it rhyme!

She’s incredibly excited to be part of Tongue Tied this year alongside such an amazing group of finalists ✨

THE HAMMER & TONGUE BRIGHTON FINAL 2026 🏆 With a very questionable weather forecast looming, 300 people came out to Brighton Open Air Theatre, loaded with umbrellas, flasks of tea, bottles of Prosecco and hope in their hearts ♥️ The heavens opened for the first 30 minutes, providing an aptly biblical start to proceedings. Then, a rainbow appeared during Gray Taylor’s poem, Sarah Charsley forwent standing under the gazebo to show the rain who was boss, the clouds parted and the rain stopped! 🌈 Each and every one of the finalists BLEW US AWAY and the scores were VERY close. But, it was Sarthak Mukherji, Ayana Playle and Marty who scored highest, qualifying for the final round. We were then treated to a second poem from our top three and the atmosphere was ELECTRIC. In the end, it was Ayana Playle who took it home, scoring a whopping 29.7 out of 30 and becoming the 2026 Hammer & Tongue Brighton Champion! There were tears, laughter and a high-quality certificate in a frame. 😭 To finish the night, the incredible Kate Ireland delivered an absolutely phenomenal headline set. She wowed everyone with her wonderful words and exhilarating performance. It was the perfect end to a truly spectacular night of spoken word poetry ❤️

Thank you to EVERYONE who came out to watch us on Friday night. Thank you to the judges who had to juggle scorecards, umbrellas and fate of 10 poets in their hands! Thank you to Sophie Glew for being sacrificial poet. Thank you to our phenomenal headliner, Kate Ireland. Thank you to George for the photos and Sofia for the videos. Thank you to Gray for helping me hand out umbrellas. Thank you to my lovely mum for keeping the certificate dry. Thank you to my wonderful partner in poetry and life, Ashton, for being on scores, time & tech (and for wearing such a snazzy tracksuit). Thank you to the magical Brighton Open Air Theatre for having us - thank you to all the wonderful volunteers and to Adam the Duty Manager for facilitating the evening so beautifully. And finally, thank you to each and every one of the truly talented poets who competed on Friday. You are incredible and I’m so grateful you all shared your words ❤️

8 DAYS TO GO 🏆 Here’s our eigth fabulous finalist, March slam winner RYAN BURLE 🎤 Ryan is a Chichester-based poet and performer whose work blends sharp humour with raw honesty, capturing the chaos, calm, and quiet beauty of being human. Co-founder and host of the Tongue Tied Poetry Slam, he’s also brought words to the water by producing Poets on the Canal with Chichester Fringe, and his poetry has featured on BBC Radio across the South. His street project, Poems for Strangers, sees him with a vintage 1960s typewriter, creating poems on the spot for anyone who asks. In 2024, he released his debut collection Write, Flight or Freeze, a heartfelt exploration of the fragility and wonder of life ❤️ @ryanbpoet

WHAT WILL HAPPEN AT THE FINAL?🏆
