I visited Antoine Bourdelle’s workshop and studio in late January, at Musée Bourdelle in Paris. Still adjusting to the time difference, I arrived too early—before sunrise. Sitting alone in the dark with the sculptures, however, clarified something about how they should be seen, or perhaps how I would photograph them.Bourdelle described his work as “matière et esprit”— matter and spirit. That tension is immediately felt upon entering his workshop in Paris. Every surface still hums with a devotion to the eternal; even the air feels held. These humanistic forms are not treated or viewed as flesh and blood, but as structure, as forms built to outlast the body.The Dying Centaur rises among the other figures in the studio, towering still in his suffering. His legs buckle into themselves, his lyre silenced, his head turned inward as if listening to something only he can hear. In the myth, Chiron—wounded by a poisoned arrow—chooses to release his mortality rather than remain in suffering, and is lifted into the sky as a constellation. It feels, in Bourdelle’s rendering, less like an ending than a transformation into the eternal.At first glance, the figures seem anchored in their physical forms, but as morning light traces their profiles, that certainty loosens. Having learned from Rodin and later passing the torch to Giacometti, Bourdelle exists as a kind of conduit—one through which matter is continually shaped toward the eternal.My objective in making photographs is not to alter what is already there, but to register the encounter—how the subject exists, if only briefly, through my eyes. Excited to share a new story I photographed for Vanity Fair’s Summer Issue on the iconic Los Angeles architect Paul R. Williams.
