I received my black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu today under my coach @teamtorreshq

I began with Kaizen jiu jitsu in Newry sports centre with Professors Ruairi Hansen and Dermot McCann when I was 8 and in 2012 when I was 16, after my father left for America, I was introduced to Seb by @cormac.ohanlon and @gareth_watson_79. I’ve competed in Ireland, Europe and when I was a brown belt I moved to New York to train at Renzos to compete in the US. I took a hiatus from jiu jitsu to pursue another profession but it’s always been there for me and so have the people at Team Torres.

I’m thankful to my parents @stephxolynn and I’m truly grateful for all the friends I’ve made, the people I’ve trained with and the lessons I’ve learned on the mats over the years which have shaped me into who I am.

Im proud and fortunate to have started with Seb and even though I won’t be around as often I look forward to representing the club as a black belt and passing on the knowledge and life lessons that I’ve been taught here.

Timeline of events
Saturday 25th July:
-180lbs weigh ins: 9-10:30AM
Competitor/Coach show time: 5PM to discuss any final questions/collect payment.
Spectator showtime 6PM
$25 for Competitors (winner takes all)
$5 at door for Spectators (goes toward winners)

Rules:
Submission Only (all submissions legal)
2 mins EBI Overtime
Verbal taps count

If a competitor is in a choke and the referee checks consciousness do not stop/release the submission unless the Referee says so or the position will continue as is.
If Competitors go out of bounds they will restart back standing.
Referee may reset competitors if they are too close to the edge of the mat.
You cannot walk off the mat in a submission.
The Referee may stop the bout at any time if they feel the competitors health is at risk.
Referees decision is final.

Banned Techniques:
Slamming
Jumping closed guard
Flying Scissors
Tani Otoshi

Tournament.
White belt Qualifier: due to limited Blue belts we have 4 White belts who will compete amongst themselves for two spots in the -180lbs Blue belt division.

Matchups will be made at random for both divisions and placed on the board prior to the tournament beginning.

Finals
No time limit.
No EBI overtime.
Winner takes the Competitor/door money.

Today I became a Martial Arts Instructor Trainer (MAIT) in the United States Marine Corps. Thank you to the instructors here at the MAFCE and to all the MAIT’s I’ve met in the Fleet who’ve mentored me in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP) and shown me the standard. I made a lot of great friends over these 7 weeks and Im truly honoured to be apart of this prestigious group of martial artists.

Thank you to my Wife @stephxolynn for her support, my Ma for those long drives into Newry to train with the boys @teamtorresnewry and to my Uncle who shared his love for martial arts with me when I was a child. I love and miss you dearly, Uncle Joe.
