John Douglas McKinley

March 14, 1949 – September 12, 2026

John Douglas McKinley, 77, passed away on September 12, 2026, in St. George, Utah, after a battle with cancer.

John was born on March 14, 1949, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Frederick Paul McKinley and Nancy Marie VanRy McKinley. He spent much of his working life as a truck driver for Consolidated Freightways, a career that suited his hardworking and independent nature.

John had a lifelong love of sports and the outdoors. Baseball held a particularly special place in his heart, and his passion for the game led him to train to become a professional baseball umpire. He also loved golfing, fishing, hiking, biking, and just about anything that allowed him to spend time outdoors.

Later in life, John retired to St. George, Utah, where he could enjoy the beautiful scenery and outdoor lifestyle that meant so much to him.

Above all, John cherished his family and was a loving grandfather to his two granddaughters, Clara and Alice. They held a very special place in his heart, and the memories they shared with their grandfather will remain with them always.

John is survived by his son, Ryan McKinley, and Ryan’s wife, Kim McKinley; his beloved granddaughters, Clara and Alice; his brother, Edward Paul McKinley, and Edward’s wife, Anne; as well as extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick Paul McKinley and Nancy Marie VanRy McKinley.

Of all the beautiful places John experienced throughout his life, Pebble Beach Golf Course held a particularly special place in his heart. He often said it was the most beautiful place he had ever seen.

In keeping with John’s wishes, his ashes will be spread at Pebble Beach Golf Course while “Throw Me a Party” by Rita Wilson plays—a final request that reflects how he wanted to be remembered: not only with sadness at his passing, but with a celebration of the life he lived and the memories he left behind.

It is a fitting farewell for a man who loved golf, sports, the outdoors, and the beauty of nature.

It’s crazy to think this all started with you as a client… then you became a friend, then a business partner, and somewhere along the way you just became family. ❤️

You believed in us, believed in our dreams, and jumped on this crazy ride with us — and we couldn’t imagine doing life without you now. The way you love our family, the way you love our girls, and the way you’re always there for all of us means more than you’ll ever know.

Happy Birthday to the love of my life, my best friend, and my forever teammate. ❤️🎉

There aren’t enough words to describe what you mean to me, but today I’ll try.

From the very beginning, you’ve believed in me—even in moments when I doubted myself. You’ve loved me with everything you have, challenged me to become a better man, and shown me what real partnership, loyalty, and unconditional love truly look like.

People see my name on the front of the salon, but what they don’t always see is the incredible woman behind it all. Every success we’ve had has your fingerprints on it. Your vision, your work ethic, your strength, and your endless support have helped build everything we’ve created together. You keep our world running, our business thriving, and our family grounded. None of this would exist the way it does without you.

Thank you for being the best mom our girls could ever ask for. They have the privilege of growing up with a role model who is strong, fearless, compassionate, intelligent, confident, and unapologetically herself. They are lucky to call you Mom, and I’m the luckiest man alive to call you my wife.

You’re the rock that holds us all together. My biggest supporter. My greatest inspiration. My safe place.
