30 years ago today, I had my first “jamband” experience at the H.O.R.D.E. Festival!

My parents went out of town with my brother and sister, and they let me stay home alone.

They told me not to drive their minivan to Texas Motorplex for the show, but we had to get there somehow.

Thankfully this was before cellphones and the expectation of instant communication, so I drove myself and four friends to the show, in my parent’s minivan!

Dave Matthews Band was the highlight. Blues Traveler was great. Lenny Kravitz only played one song due to the heat, and somehow, we missed Medeski, Martin, and Wood.

It was an awesome adventure for the 16 year old version of myself, and a year later I graduated high school early, caught 5 Phish shows in Texas, San Francisco, and the Gorge in Washington State, then moved to Austin for college. by @ryanphishes

On Friday March 13th 1998, I saw Bob Weir and Ratdog for the first time. I had been listening to Grateful Dead for several years, trading tapes, buying albums, and renting concert videos on VHS from blockbuster. I read on the road, the electric kool aid acid test, anything seemingly steeped in their mythology.

Experiencing live Grateful Dead music was something I had been anticipating for years, and it was a special night with old friends from Dallas and new college friends in Austin. Of course, it changed my life.

I was fortunate to see Bob play with Ratdog again in Austin and on trips to Las Vegas and California.

I saw Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart, and Bill Kreutzmann, the surviving “core four” Grateful Dead members, play as the Dead at Willie Nelson’s 4th of July picnic in 2003. Willie even joined them for a great take on Milestones.

My last time seeing Bob was with Dead and Co in Dallas in May 2023, but his performance a few months earlier at the Majestic theatre with the Wolf Bros is the Weir experience that stands out in my mind. He seemed completely in his element leading a bigger band through songs he’d lived for six decades.

Forever grateful…

Twenty years ago, I woke up to the surreal then indescribable loss of my little brother Barry.

While I try to celebrate his life more than mourn his death, today is a day for both.

I think about him every day, and I try to live my life with some of the adventurous spirit and determination to have fun despite illness that I saw in him. by @ryanphishes

I rang in the New Year with Phish and 20,000 friends at Madison Square Garden in New York City!

It was my 15th Phish New Year’s Eve show, 13 at the Garden, Miami in 2003, and of course the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation in the Everglades in 1999!

2025 was a difficult year, and I’m thankful I got to start and end it with my favorite band and the best people at the world’s most famous arena in NYC!!!

Happy 2026!!!!!!

Thanks @ericdavidwolf for doing a couple shows with me! It was so fun!!
Looking forward to Sphere 🪩!!! taken in Madison Square Garden by @ryanphishes

Billy Strings and his band returned to Texas to close out their Fall tour and 2025.

Friday they played to a sold out 15,000 person crowd in Ft. Worth, mesmerizing the audience with guitar wizardry and genre bending psychedelic bluegrass.

I missed the big sold out show in Austin on Saturday, but I did make it to the much smaller sold out ACL Live show Sunday, with just around 3000 people in attendance.

The band sat behind a coffee table for both sets, with subdued lightning, and no guitar effects or extended jams, just pure bluegrass picking and singing.

Billy truly seemed to enjoy playing songs he grew up with and telling stories. It was a special night and great weekend! by @ryanphishes

I ❤️ David Byrne
His show last night at Fair Park Music Hall was wonderful!
All the musicians and dancers were fantastic.

When I got home I realized the show was 24 years to the day after I got to see David Byrne tape a performance for the Austin City Limits TV show.

He was great then and keeps getting better! by @ryanphishes
