Hello. I have some incredible, humbling, insane news.

It is my privilege to announce that as of 10.30pm tonight, the King has awarded me a British Empire Medal in the 2026 New Year Honours list for my services to sufferers of loss of taste (a category invented just for me, making me the first UK recipient ever). The culmination of 8 years of work with Life Kitchen. I’m beyond grateful and overwhelmed by the honour.

I have so many people to thank, those that backed me, Life Kitchen and believed in me unwaveringly over the years. Firstly to my mother, without whom I wouldn’t have done what I did. I truly hope that from our darkness we have brought others light. I miss you everyday. I hope I make you proud.

Secondly, Kimberley Duke, (@kimberleydukee) my best friend, my partner in this incredible journey. You are my rock in this world and we built this together through the ups and downs - Life Kitchen is our legacy. I’m so proud to share this with you.

Then of course my family, my amazing sister Rachael and my unbelievable dad Shaun. They truly allow me to be able to do what I do and their support and love are what have gotten me through the hardest of times. I would also like to thank my brother-in-law Chris, my aunties and uncles, cousins and especially my Nana, who have provided so much support to me when I’ve needed it.

I am privileged to have had some notable people champion me selflessly over the last 8 years: @nigellalawson without I simply wouldn’t be where I am today. @hughfearnleywhittingstall , @jamieoliver, @carolebamford, @lilyallen and many more. Yesterday I was invited to 10 Downing Street for a private tour with the other New Years Honours recipients. It’s been a crazy surreal few days and the beginning of a wild new chapter.

Ryan Riley BEM (or b&m medal as my dad keeps accidentally calling it).

In all seriousness though I’m beyond proud, grateful and in a bit of a whirlwind. This doesn’t happen to a kid from a North East council estate who had a little dream and a lot of audacity but here we are. I’m embarking on a side quest reviewing some of the things I get sent. Camping and outdoor adventures aren’t usually my thing.

But even have to admit, this is pretty cool. It reminds me of a time I got booked on the fire stage at a food festival and I just had to wing it.

The @thehungerhub_ is incredibly simple to use and could probably turn even the least enthusiastic outdoorsman (me) into someone who suddenly wants to cook outside. Perfect for camping, roadtrips or anyone who enjoys an outdoor lifestyle.

Not paid for, just gifted just genuinely impressed. Retails around £200 which I think it really good for a whole outdoor set up!
