By the time we got to Marquette I started to question what the hell we were doing and how far we could actually make it sailing a 29ft boat from 1977 across Lake Superior. At this point we had run aground twice, snapped the boom, experienced engine failure in the St. Mary’s, and lost the bilge pump, alternator, fresh water pump, main halyard, and more. The lines were blurred between “it’s no big deal” and “we could die”. Watching the weather for weeks, discussions with the Navigator @sickhandle and finally the push to Copper Harbor made the passage to Isle Royale a real possibility. We posted up in Marquette for 8 days waiting for a weather window to sail to the Soo. Once the wind finally switched from north to south we made a run for Grand Merais just before it pushed north again bringing 5-8ft waves. A few days spent in Grand Merais and then the final 17 hour sail to Sault Ste. Marie. taken in Grand Marais, Michigan by @ryanscottgers

Chippewa Harbor > Rock Harbor > McCargo Cove > Tobin Harbor > Copper Harbor > Marquette. I rounded Isle Royale and solo sailed through the Amygdaloid Channel past Belle Isle and into McCargo Cove. The plan was to sail all the way around the island but the wind had other ideas, and I hunkered down before making my way back to Copper Harbor. Isle Royale is a stunning and wild place, and I wonder if I’ll ever return. Halfway to Copper Harbor a Nuthatch appeared out of the blue and traveled with me for a few hours, hunting for spiders on the rigging and inside the cabin. Unfazed, it let me pet its little head and was unusually friendly. A few days later while underway to Marquette it miraculously joined to boat again for an hour or so (I like to think it was the same bird).
