Mama, can you hear me?

We laid you to rest the other day, but the truth still hasn’t sunken in. I always thought we would have 10, 15, 20 more years together before I had to face the reality of a life without you. Since you left us, I feel like I’ve been walking through a desert with no water, no food, no warmth, no comfort. None of the love and kindness you filled my life with from the day I was born. You were my bridge over troubled water. The light that brought me out of the darkness time and time again. You made me love your favorite musicals. You taught me your favorite hymns. There are still so many life lessons left for me to learn without my greatest teacher guiding my hand. So many milestones left to reach without your encouraging words pushing me past the finish line. I’m still trying to process things. Waiting for a monsoon to wash away the pain and bring life back to this desert of grief that is holding me captive. I miss you and I love you. On today’s episode of things nobody asked for: I spent this summer avoiding the heat at all costs and reading because, yes, I do more than play football manager and the sims. These are all the books I read and reread in the comfort of bedroom and a/c as a #thoughtdaughter 🌱

A fitting reread considering the amount of heatwaves we’ve had as the climate crisis becomes impossible to ignore

Genuinely one of the best books I’ve ever read

I first read this book when I was 12 bc I saw it in Costco and liked the cover (I discovered many books this way). It hits different now that I understand a thing or two about grief

One of my favorite memoirs by one of my favorite authors

Poetry isn’t a go-to for me usually, but once again, recent changes drew me to this one

I usually read to escape reality, so fantasy and sci-fi are a must. The Earthsea books do it for me every time

One of those “food for thought” books. 10/10 no notes.

One year ago today. I’ve run out of ways to talk about grief. There are days where I’m so busy my brain doesn’t have time to process it. There are nights when I wake up in tears thinking about your laugh, your hugs. Most of the time, my mind pretends that you’ve been away for a while. Maybe you’re visiting your sisters in Nigeria. Maybe you’re buying jewelry in Milan. Pretending fills the void for a little while, but every now and then everything becomes real again. I replay the last time I saw you in my head often. That last, long hug and a “see you soon!” thinking you would still be here come Christmas. I’m grateful that I experienced 25 years of your love. I wish we had 25 more. I hear your voice everywhere. All of the lessons you taught me. All the bad habits you scolded me for. I miss our FaceTime calls. I miss sitting in the car with you running errands. I miss waking up just knowing you’re out there somewhere. Continue to rest in peace, mommy🕊️💛 by @s.imi
