We’re opening the doors at 2 Haymarket today as part of this year’s Castlegate Festival.

Pop by to see the latest plans for our new home and take a look inside the old Grade II listed Yorkshire Bank that's been closed since 2017.

Three of the new sculptures in the gallery were produced at S1 Artspace’s new premises at 2 Haymarket, where James made Jesmonite casts directly within the building — including casting a bank safe, a staircase, and the post office’s mosaic tiled floor and parquet. Curator Victoria Sharples captured these photographs while James worked.

Thanks to the incredible support of @southyorkshiremca — who have committed an additional £1 million in funding towards our building project — and a further £10,000 grant from the @archhfund - we’re another step closer to transforming our Grade II listed building into an ambitious new visual arts venue for Sheffield 🙌

Last chance to see James Thompson’s solo exhibition On Lost Ground at Gloam Gallery, open until 4pm today ✨

Three of the new sculptures were produced at our new premises at 2 Haymarket, where James made Jesmonite casts directly within the building - including a bank safe, a staircase, and the post office's mosaic tiled floor and parquet.

The works form part of James’ wider exploration of architecture, changing land use and the traces buildings carry with them. At 2 Haymarket, a building that has been a post office, stock exchange and bank, fragments of those histories are still very much present.

On Lost Ground, Thompson’s debut solo exhibition at the gallery, brings together a new body of site-specific sculpture and a live architectural sound intervention that responds to GLOAM’s layered history as an industrial site, DIY music venue, and artist-led space, as well as the ongoing transformation of Castlegate in Sheffield’s City Centre.

Developed through casting, excavation, and architectural listening, the works draw connections between artist-led spaces, changing land use, and traces of urban transformation. The installation includes casts of S1 Artspace’s new premises in a former bank, a rammed-earth work made from material excavated during the Castlegate archaeological dig, and a live sound installation that amplifies vibrations travelling through GLOAM’s structure.

On Lost Ground explores how buildings accumulate histories and how ground retains traces of the past while carrying shifting values and potential.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a participatory workshop (more coming soon 👀)

The project is funded by the Henry Moore Foundation and the University of Leeds, and has been developed with the generous support of S1 Artspace, Sheffield City Council, and Wessex Archaeology.

This is the first edition Mosley has produced where the artist has hand-embellished each individual archival print. Brush marks accentuate elements within the image making each edition entirely unique.

All proceeds raised through the sale of the edition will directly support the charity's activities.

An accompanying solo exhibition of Mosley’s paintings produced at S1 Artspace between 2014 – 2017 will be presented from 30 Nov - 17 Dec.

Mosely has a long-standing relationship with S1 spanning almost two decades. From his first artist studio following graduation from university in 2003 to becoming a trustee of the charity in 2016.

📢 The S1 | Chatsworth Residency
International Call for Applications is now closed!

We would like to thank those who’ve submitted applications to our open call for consideration for our residency programme & subsequent exhibition. We’re delighted to learn that applications have been submitted from 55 countries.

Applications will be reviewed over the coming weeks by our curatorial team and selection panel (to be announced soon).

The residency will take place this spring, and a subsequent exhibition will be presented across both S1’s gallery and sculpture park from September this year.

During the residency the selected applicant will have exclusive use of S1’s 150 sqm gallery to use as your studio, which is located in the heart of the Park Hill estate. In addition, the selected will have access to aspects of Chatsworth’s House, Garden, Archive or Art Collection.

To support the residency, accommodation will be provided, along with a £5,000 fee, £1,500 research and development budget, £500 towards travel costs (up to £1,500 for international applicants), and access to the LUX film archive. The production cost of new work for the subsequent exhibition will be secured against the selected applicants proposal.

The scaffolding is finally up! 💪 Yorkshire’s heritage specialists @pinnacleconservationltd have begun making some initial repairs to our new premises to protect the Grade II listed building while designs for the full restoration continue to be developed.

These will make the building watertight and structurally secure, preparing it for the next stage of redevelopment. Once these works are complete, we’ll be opening our doors to let you have a sneak peek inside and to share our initial plans 😊
