LAST DAY TODAY 👀

James Thompson: On Lost Ground at GLOAM
@j_ames__thompson

Open: 12–4

Three of the new sculptures in the gallery were produced at S1 Artspace’s new premises at 2 Haymarket, where James made Jesmonite casts directly within the building — including casting a bank safe, a staircase, and the post office’s mosaic tiled floor and parquet. Curator Victoria Sharples captured these photographs while James worked.

Thank you to @s1artspace for supporting this project ✨

GLOAM presents:

On Lost Ground, James Thompson
@j_ames__thompson

PV 6–9pm 04/09/26
Open Saturdays 12–4pm, 4–27 September
Or by appointment

On Lost Ground, Thompson’s debut solo exhibition at the gallery, brings together a new body of site-specific sculpture and a live architectural sound intervention that responds to GLOAM’s layered history as an industrial site, DIY music venue, and artist-led space, as well as the ongoing transformation of Castlegate in Sheffield’s City Centre.

Developed through casting, excavation, and architectural listening, the works draw connections between artist-led spaces, changing land use, and traces of urban transformation. The installation includes casts of S1 Artspace’s new premises in a former bank, a rammed-earth work made from material excavated during the Castlegate archaeological dig, and a live sound installation that amplifies vibrations travelling through GLOAM’s structure.

On Lost Ground explores how buildings accumulate histories and how ground retains traces of the past while carrying shifting values and potential.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a participatory workshop (more coming soon 👀)

The project is funded by the Henry Moore Foundation and the University of Leeds, and has been developed with the generous support of S1 Artspace, Sheffield City Council, and Wessex Archaeology.

🔸️Hunter 77 x Migration Matters🔸️

It was almost two years ago that Cole Morris screened the first part of Hunter 77, as part of the Dig Where You Stand exhibition with @yartspace.

This shadow puppet film captures the story of Joe Phillips, a Jamaican steelworker who, in 1971, built a boat from scrap metal so he could leave Sheffield and return to Jamaica.

Cole combines intricate shadowpuppet designs, stop motion and real audio from the archives, to create a transfixing and emotionally resonant depiction of Joe's story. In doing so he explores the complexity of British identity for early migrants, the quiet dignity of everyday resistance to racism and the enduring pull of home.

Although Joe never actually left Sheffield, Cole uses the second part of his film to take Joe on an epic voyage across the world. He meets a range of real and mythological characters that showcase stories of migration, war and displacement in the 1970s.

Our event with Migration Matters is the first opportunity to watch the full film and see how the story ends.

🗓 Join us on the 22nd June for film screening and accompanying live music performance by composer Chris Finguz and friends. Not to he missed!

📍Hosted by Yorkshire Artspace at Exchange Studios

🎫 Tickets in bio or @migmatfest website.
