HAPPY 54th San (and me 😬)

Another year older and another 2,068 miles apart (but, who's counting🙄?).

One minute I think I'm doing a roadtrip from Oregon to Detroit alone and the next, I'm veering 7 hours north into BC to pick up my better half.

Together after almost a year apart 😭🥳. No plan only a final destination, and an open road with a whole lot of fun to be had.

We added HUNDREDS of extra miles (and almost our weight in caffeine) as we zig zagged our way across Canada and USA for 12 days and almost 4,000 miles 🤦‍♀️.

At one point, San's husband, Sam, asks if we know how to read a map. 😆 Yes we do, Sam, but, where is the fun in that? 🤣

To my surprise, San who can't find her way out of a roundabout, found us several excellent detours on this trip including an epic place to camp and mountain bike in ALBERTA 😳👏 10/10!

A few days later, we get to the border and it's CLOSED! Yep. Only operates 9-5 pm 🤦‍♀️. I blame San for having me pull over so she can pee next to a corn field. Meanwhile, Jim's 🚙 on fumes. OOPS! We get to the gas station 30 miles away on a hope and a prayer. The attendant says, the next border closes in 22 minutes ( we were 30 away). I'm feeling defeated and there's San, excitement on her face, cheering me on like I'm about to enter my first formula one race. Without hesitation, I put the pedal to the metal and find gratitude for Jim's
7.3L turbo 🏎️ Of course we got there with a minute to spare 🤫 AND saw a mountain lion 😳 (unfortunately, no time to stop for a photo).

San,

I struggle to find the words to express my gratitude for you putting your life on hold for almost a month to help me start my next chapter. Even more for not ever letting the miles put distance between us.

You are selfless, kind, authentic, hilarious and the most caring person I know. You see the good in others and allow people the space to be uniquely themselves without judgement.

Growing up in the 70s, an era of paper maps, the open road signified freedom. You didn't get lost, you discovered unknown places.

Every exit was a question, every back road a different answer.

It was solitude. Armed with mixed tapes to express whatever genre your mood called for. That trusty quarter in your pocket, a symbol
of safety that you had a lifeline.

Confidence came with every wrong turn. Each detour a pivot in the story you'd tell.

Today, despite phones leaving little to the imagination and it virtually impossible to get lost, I still crave the feeling of being wanderlust.

The open road is my sanctuary. Jim reminds me of how little I need and how the simple things bring the most joy.

I like discovering "new" places and the people that I meet along the way.❤️

1. First Urban Freeway
Detroit built the world’s first urban highway — the Davison Freeway, opened in 1942. Cities worldwide later copied the design.

2. The Underwater Tunnel
Detroit and Canada are connected by the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, opened in 1930 — one of the first underwater car tunnels in the world, running beneath the Detroit River internationally linking two countries.

3. Detroit Has an Underground City
Beneath Detroit lies a massive salt mine — still active — stretching 1,500 acres under the city and its suburbs, some 1,100 feet underground.

ME vs ME

I signed up for a half a half marathon Oct/2025 having NEVER run 🤷🏻‍♀️

My training in January didn't start out pretty OR easy.
Run 1/10th of a mile and walk the rest. Then 1/4. Then 1/2. It took over two MONTHS to get to ONE MILE!
Ego? Shattered.
Consistency? Spotty (or not at all for a couple months).
Who’s watching anyway, right?

Fast forward—I’m chatting with someone who just ran 100 MILES.
Me? I hadn’t cracked 2.
But something in that convo sparked my mindset to shift.

I realized:
**I can embrace the agony of the discomfort and still keep going.
**my mind/ego wanted me to stop more than my body
**tomorrow will never be as hard as today, keep going

That night?
I ran SIX MILES—nonstop.
No walking. No quitting.

Start ugly.
Start slow.
But start.
