My personal goal for our run on Broadway has been to push for accountability, action, and most of all, CHANGE from Broadway itself (and the people running it), hoping to help it become a much safer space for queer & trans folks to exist on all sides of the experience. Feeling tired of being misgendered by audience members after the show and seeing discourse online that continues to erase the gender expansive bodies on our stage, I decided to approach Roundabout with an idea to create some sort of resource for our audience members.

I figured that this resource would reach the largest audience in the form of a program insert. Playbills are something that pretty much every single person who enters into a Broadway theatre interacts with, and to me, they feel like an incredible (and largely untapped) opportunity to be a great tool for helping audiences leave a theatre with more information than they entered with. I collaborated with the gender expansive babes of our 1776 company, and the folks at Roundabout, and together we were able to create the document you see pictured here, which is now inserted into every single @Playbill at every single 1776 performance (including a QR code that leads to more resources)!

This insert isn’t going to fix the way trans people are treated in this industry over night, but it is proof that we are here, carving out space for ourselves, and we aren’t going anywhere. I encourage folks in positions of power at any theatrical institutions to think about how you can be taking care of your artists on and off stage ALWAYS, but especially when their intersections are the subject of the work. This was an idea that required resources, time, and MONEY, and institutions have to be willing to do provide ALL of those things if they really want to be living the words they preach to us in their DEI statements. Here’s to more change in this industry that we can see with our own eyeballs AND most importantly, to all the people I’m inspired by who refuse to stop pushing for it.

Trans People Have Always Existed - they existed in 1776, and they absolutely exist ON BROADWAY!

After over two years of waiting for the pandemic to let us through, we opened 1776 on Broadway last night!! The past month has been a whirlwind and last night was such a treat, celebrating the hard work of this company and over 38 BROADWAY DEBUTS!!!!!

Now let’s talk about the fits. I’m so so SO SOOO grateful to the incredible @evieschu (aka @styledbyschu, @gubbins.nyc) for putting together mine and Ariella’s incredible looks for opening night. We wanted to feel so absolutely us on this big day, and Evie made it happen. Between sourcing & conceptualizing our custom harnesses from the incredible @goldencalfleather, to designing, hand painting and studding this UNREAL COAT that I still cannot get over, Evie went above and beyond to help us feel unabashedly ourselves, in our bodies, and queer as hell. Run to get them on your team!!!!

Thank you to everyone for your love about this milestone, I am overwhelmed with gratitude to each and every one of you and your notes of love and celebration!!! ❤️❤️❤️

5 years!! Five years of growing and learning and falling deeper and deeper in love with your brain, your silliness, your insane ability to connect, the way you care for your friends, the way you make everyone feel like they are the only person in the world, and working every day to be someone who deserves to have such special access to all those super powers. I am so grateful for the countless ways you have helped me find my way into the person I am today. Every day I’m reminded how ridiculously lucky I am to get to build a life with you. When I left for San Diego to do Regency Girls, I thought three months was going to feel like forever, but now that we’re down to the last two weeks it feels like the time has just sprinted by. There’s nothing I love doing more than making a new musical. To get to do it with this insanely talented and ridiculous group of silly gooses and learn from the fiercest comedic geniuses every day for the past two months has been the biggest gift. Tons of love to this beautiful cast who have not only worked their asses off, but have also filled this experience with belly laughs, countless bits, and so much love.

I’m so grateful to the incredible, hilarious, and huge hearted word smiths that are @gaballgreen and @jencrittenden for building a big beautiful world and handling Scutter with such care and love- and for trusting me to help shape the way we share his story with the world. Getting to sing @amangreen’s hilariously clever lyrics over @curtisrustic’s sweeping score brought to soaring heights by his and @samps42 orchestrations each performance brings me so much joy and I love watching audiences fall in love with it. @patricksulken you’re a dream of a music director- your kindness and patience is absolutely unmatched.

Thank you to @rlg24, @becausenicoleh, and @fiedlerontheruf for leading us into this gorgeous chapter of the show and supporting us along the way.

@joshrhodes1115, @leeawilkins, and @dababadoo - the way you center joy, kindness, and collaboration as a directing/choreography team is a game changer, and to be in a room ran by the three of you is a true delight. Thank you for encouraging us to be present and to remain students of the process- I’m so grateful for the things I’ve learned in the two months we spent mounting this gorgeous beast.

And extra special shout out to my dear sweet love @ariellaserur who has been my rock during this process and remained patient and loving as ever as we navigate the longest time we’ve been apart in our four+ years together. I love you endlessly ❤️

Regency Girls dump 🩷✨🩵 in honor of our FIRST PREVIEW TONIGHT! Get your butts to San Diego @theoldglobe to check out this delightfully hilarious and heartfelt show we’ve been cooking up. There was no better way to spend Trans Day of Visibility than bringing a new trans character to life. So grateful to be making a new musical with a bunch of genius goofballs- I promise you don’t wanna miss @regencygirlsmusical!!!!

A year and a half with this gorgeous, goofy piece- sorting new pages, wearing microphones in studios, carrying around 5 inch binders and finally we get to bring this baby to the stage!!! I’ve had the immense pleasure of falling in love with these people, this role, and this show and I’m so excited to spend the next three months in San Diego bringing all our work to life! It’s not at all lost on me that I have the gift of playing a funny, romantic trans role like Scutter in a joyful show about bodily autonomy at a time like this- when each day this country is becomes an increasingly dark place for our community.
