How many years of your life have you spent making choices based on three quiet words?

In South Asian culture, the invisible shadow of "log kya kahenge" dictates everything from our career paths and relationship choices to how we dress, speak, and live.

Over time, we stop hearing that judgment only from relatives or neighbors and begin internalizing it in our own minds, constantly editing ourselves to avoid disapproval.

We trade our authentic happiness for a script written by people who will never have to carry the consequences of our choices.

People will always talk whether you follow their expectations or not. Stop spending your life trying to earn approval for simply existing.

If this hit a little too close to home, share this with someone who needs to hear it today.

Before we ask men to open up, it's worth being honest about what they were taught.

Most South Asian men were raised into a role rather than a personality. Provide. Protect. Don't complain. Handle it. Many watched fathers who worked double shifts, moved countries alone, lost parents overseas and never once said out loud that it was hard, because there was no version of being a man where that was allowed.

So the men in our lives aren't refusing to talk. A lot of them were never given the words, and were shown fairly clearly what happened to men who used them.

Which means "just open up" rarely works on its own. What does help: talking side by side instead of face to face, in the car, on a walk, while fixing something. Not reacting too strongly the first time something real comes out. Asking about the specific thing rather than the general one.

And if you're the man reading this, you don't have to be falling apart to deserve support.

The Invisible Load: What South Asian Women Carry

South Asian Moms Community is excited to welcome Nav and Sim, co-founders of Saath Wellness, for an important conversation about the invisible mental and emotional load that South Asian women carry.

Navneet is a South Asian Occupational Therapist and Clinical Counsellor, while Sim holds a Master’s in Social Work. Together, they bring professional expertise and lived experience to supporting South Asian women and families through cultural expectations, relationships, family dynamics, and the many roles women navigate every day.

Through Saath Wellness, a Calgary-based wellness space, they are creating culturally relevant conversations around mental health and well-being where women feel seen, supported, and understood.

In this session, we’ll explore:

* The invisible mental and emotional load women carry
* Cultural expectations and the pressure to put everyone else first
* The many roles we play as mothers, daughters, partners, and women
* Making space for ourselves without guilt

📅 Wednesday, October 21
🕓 4:00–5:00 PM
💻 Online via Zoom

Come as you are, bring your chai, and join us for an honest and supportive conversation.

You deserve to feel seen, heard, and supported, too.

Hosted by South Asian Moms Community in collaboration with Saath Wellness.

You can understand every root cause and read every self-help book, yet still feel completely stuck in your own body.

In our culture, we are conditioned to intellectualize our pain, analyze our family patterns, and think our way out of generational trauma.

But trauma does not live in thoughts. It lives in a nervous system that learned early on that staying quiet and keeping the peace was the only way to survive.

As Gabor Maté and Bessel van der Kolk remind us, we cannot release pain alone and we cannot think our way to healing.

It softens only when it is witnessed and when the body finally feels safe enough to let go.

If you are tired of carrying everything in your head without feeling any real change, it is time for a different kind of support.

Tag someone in the comments who needs to hear this reminder today.

Worth saying out loud: overthinking usually isn't a thinking problem. It's a way of trying to stay in control.

Somewhere along the way your mind learned that if you could just think through every possible outcome in advance, nothing could catch you off guard. Replay the conversation enough times and you'll find the thing you said wrong. Plan for the worst and you'll be ready for it. It feels useful, which is exactly why it's so hard to stop.

But the thoughts aren't actually solving anything. They're pacing. And you can't think your way out of a feeling. The way out is almost always through the body, not the mind.

That's why these three work. Grounding, sound and writing don't argue with your thoughts or try to prove them wrong. They change what's happening in your body underneath them, and the thoughts follow.

If your mind never switches off, that's worth talking to someone about.

The roles we take on as kids aren't random. They're smart solutions to the situation we were handed.

The translator learned language quickly because someone in the family needed a voice. The peacemaker learned to read a room before anyone spoke, because reading it wrong had consequences. The one who never asked for anything learned that having needs created tension, and tension felt unbearable.

None of that was weakness. It was clever. It kept you safe, and often it kept everyone else steady too.

What happens is that the role doesn't switch off when things change. You're thirty-four, you pay your own bills, you're with someone who's happy to hear what you want, and you still find yourself checking the room, softening your words, managing everyone. Still translating.

Therapy isn't about getting rid of that part of you. It's about giving you a choice about when to use it, instead of it running on its own for the rest of your life.

You're allowed to keep the skill and put down the job.

October is ADHD Awareness Month, and it is time to move past the blame of telling someone to just try harder.

In our communities, struggles with focus, organization, or time management are too often brushed off as laziness.

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition affecting attention, impulse control, and activity levels. It is a persistent pattern affecting daily life, not a lack of willpower.

If attention, organization, or constant restlessness are affecting your daily life, you do not have to navigate it alone. Let's start the conversation.

World Mental Health Day is today, and the most radical step in South Asian culture is stopping the habit of pretending "sab theek hai" just to keep the peace.

Growing up, we are taught to bury our struggles, protect izzat, and carry heavy burdens in complete silence. But healing never starts by hiding your pain.

Healing starts the moment you give yourself space to feel, speak, and finally be heard 🤍

If you are tired of masking and ready to unpack what you have been carrying, you do not have to do it alone.

There's usually one more thing this conversation misses in our communities.
Most South Asian couples aren't arguing as two people. There are others in the room too.

His mother's opinion on how the house is run. Her father's expectations about visits. The cousin's wedding that turns into a two-week negotiation. The comparison to a couple neither of them even likes. A whole running commentary nobody asked for but both of them are constantly answering to.

So one person isn't only saying "I need you to hear me." They're saying "I need to know you'll stand next to me when it costs you something with your family." And the other isn't only pulling away. They're stuck between two loyalties nobody ever taught them how to hold at the same time, and going quiet feels safer than picking a side.

Once a couple can say that out loud, the fight stops being about the dishes. It becomes a shared problem with a shared solution, which is a very different room to sit in.

Book a free consultation with us if you and your partner keep having the same argument in different clothes.

And here's the part that often goes unsaid. A lot of us already do these things. We just don't call it wellness, because it didn't come in the right packaging.

Making chai and drinking it hot, standing at the counter. Oiling your hair, or someone else's. Kneading dough. Sitting in the kitchen while someone cooks and neither of you says much. A walk after dinner. Namaz, paath, or whatever prayer looks like in your home. That particular quiet of folding laundry with the TV on in the background.

That's all regulation. Repetitive, steady, familiar and often shared, which is more or less exactly what a body is looking for when it needs to calm down.

Wellness didn't have to be imported to count. Some of the steadiest tools you have were handed to you by a grandmother who would have found the word "regulation" very funny.

You don't need a new routine. Start by noticing which ordinary things you already do are quietly holding you together, and then do them on purpose.
