POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
In Somalia, slow living is woven into the rhythm of everyday life. It is not the clock that determines what comes next, but the warmth of the sun, its position in the sky, and the changing light throughout the day. Daily life unfolds in harmony with this natural rhythm, with food rituals marking the passing hours.

Just after dawn, the familiar sounds of canjeero mix being prepared signal the beginning of a new day. As the sweet aroma of freshly made canjeero and spiced Somali shaah fills the air, children leave their homes for school.

By midday, the call to prayer signals another shift. As the sun reaches its peak and the heat intensifies, life slows down. Prayers are followed by a moment of rest, a chance to retreat from the heat.

And as the afternoon unfolds, it is time for casariyo: a cherished Somali tradition of taking an afternoon break to rest and gather with family, friends, and neighbors over shaah and Somali coffee, served with savory treats like sambusa and sweet delights such as xalwo and doolsho (cake). A moment to slow down, share stories, and welcome visitors.

In Soomaaliya, chef and writer @ifahmed structures her cookbook around these same rhythms of daily life. From morning meals to casariyo (afternoon tea), light bites, main dishes, macmacaan (desserts), and cabitaan (drinks), the book takes us through Somali cuisine not just as a collection of recipes, but as an expression of everyday life and cultural traditions that place rest and community at their heart. What’s your favorite Somali food ritual or tradition? Share it in the comments!

On October 19, author and chef @ifahmed will be joining us in Amsterdam for a literary evening around her debut book, Soomaaliya: Food, Memory and Migration.

What can a recipe tell us about a country’s history? About migration, memory and the ways we carry home with us?

Through recipes, lived experiences and historical research, Ifrah F. Ahmed tells a story of Somalia and a culinary heritage shaped by centuries of trade, migration, colonialism and war. A heritage passed from one generation to the next through oral storytelling and communal practice and preserved and transformed across a global diaspora.

Together with journalist and writer Ayaan Abukar, Ifrah will explore the stories behind Soomaaliya, food as an archive, and what happens to traditions passed through listening, watching and doing when displacement separates people from places, communities and elders.

Join us for an evening about food, memory, migration and belonging — and the many ways we carry home across generations and borders. 🤍

On Sunday 15 December (15:00–19:30), @framerframed hosts 𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘢𝘹 𝘪𝘺𝘰 𝘚𝘩𝘦𝘦𝘬𝘰, a relaxed 𝘁𝗲𝗮 𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 in a pop-up café format organised by the Saaxiib Community.

The event takes place after the guided tour of the current exhibition 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘴𝘵 𝘊𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘻𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱: 𝘗𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘔𝘢𝘥𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴, which examines how storytelling, visual culture, architecture and social life (re)shape citizenship in Somaliland, the Somali region and its diaspora. 𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘢𝘹 𝘪𝘺𝘰 𝘚𝘩𝘦𝘦𝘬𝘰 seeks to create connections, provide a supportive community space, and encourage the sharing of experiences and goals. With the use of curated discussion cards, attendees can enjoy meaningful conversations.

Saaxiib Community (@saaxiib.community) is founded by Kadigia, Saharla and Samiya, three Somali young women raised in the Netherlands. The word Saaxiib (pronounced ‘Saa-heeb’) means ‘friend’ in Somali. Their mission is to build a community centred around friendship, connection, and positive vibes. They created the community to offer a welcoming space where people can come together, support one another, and celebrate their own culture in an uplifting and inclusive environment.
