Our next artist in residence: Sabīne Šnē

For the next three months, we’re excited to welcome Sabīne Šnē to PRAKSIS as one of our two artists in residence. Together with Anastasia (A) Alevtin, Sabīne will be part of our residency programme through the coming months.

Sabīne is a Latvian visual artist and educator whose practice explores relationships between humans and the more-than-human. Working across moving image, sound, sculpture, creative writing, and drawing, she is interested in how organisms and elements sustain life on Earth, and how these relationships are affected by resource exploitation and extraction.

“At PRAKSIS, I’ll be exploring how cultural institutions can be understood as rhizomatic, living ecosystems, and, in exchange with the Teen Advisory Board, developing learning kits that ask how we connect, share knowledge.”

Sun Rays End in Plant Leaves

A video essay, drawings, archive fragments, personal archives and a few book rabbit holes, made as an intervention in the @lcca.lv Archive & Library, on view until 30 September

The work is part of Safe Zones and Shifting Timelines, an interdisciplinary LCCA programme, curated by @andra.silapetere

SPECULATIVE ECOLOGIES: FILMMAKER’S NOTE 🎬

Sabīne Šnē (@sabinesne), director of Caves of Our Insides, invites you to join 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲: 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 on September 17th at Lichtblick Kino.

What connects the human body to the Earth’s core? Through iron, Caves of Our Insides traces this connection, reflecting on a material that sustains life while also becoming a force of destruction.

A short film from Latvia (6’), exploring the porous relationship between our bodies, the Earth, and the forces that shape both.

Through a video essay, drawings and objects, the work brings together materials from the LCCA and my personal archive, tracing how understandings of natural environments and ecological realms have shifted in art and institutional language over the past decades, and questioning whether archives can be places where ecological concerns can be represented or contained

Performing Landscapes residency at @metropoliskbh in Copenhagen

Throughout July I started working on my first spoken word performance The Ear Beneath the Feet

Weeks of listening, hearing and encountering a place through sound, touch and the stories embedded in its landscapes

Also: cooling off in the sea, an unlimited amount of bread, cheese, and pastries, getting to know an incredible group of fellow residents form Nordic-Baltic, learning about shipyards, labour, metals, plants, trees, pollution, water, uncertain futures and the power of communities

Research-based residency at @studija_space

Explored rights for nature, speculated on the possibility of legal personhood for the Venta River, sensed the agency of more-than-humans. All grounded in the realities of global freshwater scarcity (with the heatwaves arriving right on cue)

INTERVENCE ARHĪVĀ

🔴 11. jūnijā 18.00 Alberta ielā 13 – Latvijas Laikmetīgās mākslas centra arhīvā un bibliotēkā – tiks atklāts mākslinieces @sabinesne darbs “Saules stari beidzas augu lapās”!

🔴 Mākslinieces intervence LLMC arhīvā un bibliotēkā ir daudzslāņaina video eseja un zīmējumu sērija, kas atspoguļo mainīgās attiecības starp cilvēku, dzīvo dabu, zemi un atšķirīgām varas struktūrām.

Darbs apvieno LLMC arhīvā pieejamos materiālus ar personīgām atsaucēm un pārdomām par četrām grupas izstādēm pēdējo 30 gadu nogrieznī: Sorosa mūsdienu mākslas centra – Rīga grupas izstāde “Ģeo-Ģeo” (1996) un trīs Latvijas Laikmetīgās mākslas centra izstādēm: “Mūsdienu utopija” (2001), “Nenorunātās tikšanās” (2019), “Dekoloniālās ekoloģijas” (2022).

Sabīnes Šnē darbā mākslas notikumi krustojas ar mākslinieces atmiņām un ikdienas pieredzes fragmentiem, un arhīva dokumenti tiek pamīšus kārtoti ar materiāliem, kas atrasti telefona kameras galerijā, datora mapēs ar neturpinātiem eksperimentiem un skiču kladē.

“Saules stari beidzas augu lapās” pievērš uzmanību tam, kā dzīvā daba mākslā un institucionālajā valodā no ainavas vai resursa pārvēršas par visus skarošu politisku un ekoloģisku jautājumu.
