Sandra Brewster is featured in The New York Times’ selection of “12 Artists on the Rise at The Armory Show,” with critic Aruna D’Souza highlighting ‘Make Trouble’ (2024), presented in the fair’s Platform section.

D’Souza draws attention to Brewster’s signature gel-transfer process, in which gaps, folds, abrasions and blurred passages evoke the instability of memory and her experience of the Black diaspora. Originally commissioned for the 2024 Toronto Biennial of Art, the three-part Make Trouble draws on a family photograph of Brewster and her sisters playing in their suburban neighbourhood.

Brewster is also represented in Southern Guild’s group presentation at Booth 210, which D’Souza describes as “easily the best showing at the Armory this year.”

A Place To Put Your Things is part of Counterpublic 2026: Coyote Time, in St. Louis, Missouri. Counterpublic is a triennial exhibition reimagining the possibilities of art in public life.

Thank you Wanda Nanibush and the entire team of Counterpublic for including me in this wonderful experience.

APTPYT is located in The Ville Neighbourhood - northwest of downtown St. Louis and most widely recognized for the strength of the African-American community.

……………………………………………..

A Place to Put Your Things is a functional swing, open as a space for play and to calm the spirit. The outline of the swing forms two figures leaning into a kiss. Brewster’s design invites the viewer to sit inside its embrace.

Sandra Brewster’s monumental photo-based installation ‘Make Trouble’ (2024) will be presented by Southern Guild as part of The Armory Show’s Platform section from 24–27 September.

Originally commissioned for the 2024 Toronto Biennial of Art, the four-panel work transforms Brewster’s personal childhood photographs through her distinctive gel transfer technique. Inspired by Fred Moten’s lecture ‘Black Optimism / Black Operation’ and the Child Development Group of Mississippi’s freedom song “Da da da da,” ‘Make Trouble’ considers childhood as a site of political imagination and possibility, connecting personal memory with broader histories of Black migration and ideas of futurity.

Alongside ‘Make Trouble’, visit Southern Guild at Booth 210 in the Javits Center for a group presentation featuring 21 artists from across our programme.

Hammock, as part of curator Rui Pimenta’s exhibition Where Walls Meet Sky, in the ruins of St. Anne’s Anglican Church.

Hammock takes its name from the shape of a healthy sleeping heart rate, when the pulse drops to its lowest point and remains steady. The pattern signals deep rest and the body’s capacity to recover. Here, that form becomes a metaphor for St. Anne’s, a place paused in a period of rest and healing, gathering strength before its next chapter. 🖤

Exhibition runs Thursdays to Sundays, 12-8pm.
Until September 13th.

Sandra Brewster, Josephine Baker, 2021

Sandra Brewster's "Take a Little Trip" is a series of photo-based gel transfers honoring iconic people who expressed themselves as complex human beings — through talent, community activism, and intellectualism. Each piece is developed from multiple frames of a video of the subject in conversation, alluding to the unfixable nature of their being and their tendency toward movement, geographically and imaginatively, while questioning perceived notions of monolithic Black communities. taken in Hannah Traore Gallery by @sabrewst

Infinity reflects the boundless possibilities of being human and the infinite capacity for acts of kindness. It gestures towards the infinite realities we inhabit and evokes the longing for a new visual paradigm – one that enables silenced voices to become an integral part of our common, interconnected reality, where restrictive borders dissolve and liberating futures can be imagined.
-excerpt from Curatorial Concept
