back in February, @hartnett_gallery at the @urochester exhibited the works of Canadian artist, @sabrewst. Brewster’s art is centered on the “intimacies of black life and kinship in the African diaspora. This particular exhibit, called Precious Sense, is a study of movement. Specifically the movement from “one geographic location to another”. As well as be desires and experiences of migrants in their physical movements and their histories. Leaf Fellows and Professor Mariner took a class trip to see the exhibit and to appreciate the beauty and thoughtfulness of the Precious Sense exhibit- as well as analyze the themes and modem of representation in the art and how that relates to ethnography and archiving.

Think: Conceal parts of who we are.
‘The surfaces of the photo-based gel transfer portraits have a waxy yet weathered appearance. The tears and creases are a result of transferring the ink from one paper surface to another by pressing, and materialize Brewster’s interest in migratory movement, specifically from the Caribbean to Toronto. The lack of control that the artist has during the process reflects on the experience of migration, the instability in that transition, and in turn, how it alters the individual. As with migration, the image cannot replicate itself exactly in the gel-transfer process; it will always possess the strain of the transfer and signs of abrasion. This is often only fully visible on close inspection.’

‘“Black people have a way of holding back, keeping something to ourselves. There is power in that, in being able to conceal parts of who we are.”

NP: There’s a real impact that comes out of the transfer process, which opens up a lot of interpretive directions.
SB: Yes, the transfer is about a movement from one place to another. The ink is leaving the surface of the paper and is being transferred to another surface. And because of the limited amount of control I have over the process, the paper I am working with may tear or crease. Sometimes the ink doesn’t adhere completely to the surface. This adds to the quality of the image in the end. A theme attached to my overall practice is the movement of people from the Caribbean to Toronto, and how that change of location and environment affects people’s sense of self, not only for themselves but also their children. So I see this transfer process as being similar to what happens when a person migrates from one place to another. A change occurs.”(Neil Price)

Repost• @artcaninstitute
Today the Art Canada Institute proudly launches the new online exhibition “Sandra Brewster: Traces of Home: Migration, Memory, and Being.”

M(M)A senior curator Pamela Edmonds has written an essay to accompany Brewster’s (@sabrewst) work. Titled “Shifting The Gaze”, ACI director Sara Angel describes the essay as “one that invites us to reflect on the role of the family in sustaining cultural heritage, identity, and community.” Link in bio to read!

•••

📷Born and raised in Toronto, Brewster has spent over two decades examining the effects of migration on her family and other individuals of Caribbean and African descent in her community. Incorporating their personal photographs, recollections, and cherished possessions from back home into her multilayered works, Brewster foregrounds the complexities of Black diasporic experience and identity.

✨Explore our new online exhibition by heading over to the link in our bio.

Pictured here is Sandra Brewster’s “Roots 1” (detail), 2021, one of the works which will be featured in her outdoor installation, “Walking the Don,” at Evergreen Brick Works. Based on research on Black experiences in the outdoors gathered in collaboration with writer, traveler, and scholar Jacqueline L. The images will be embedded along the southern portion of the Beltline Trail, leading and accompanying residents and visitors on their own walk towards the Brick Works site.

Looking forward to seeing this and the rest of this most excellent-sounding festival! #torontophotographer #CONTACT2022 #CanadianLensBasedArtists

Enjoyed my experience with this work by Sandra Brewster.

Sandra Brewster. Untitled (Blur), 2017-2019. Photo-based gel transfer on wall.

Untitled (Blur) depicts Toronto singer Tuku Matthews and takes up almost the entire wall on which it’s set. Matthews, a personal friend of Brewster, is a fitting subject for the artist’s work exploring legacy. Matthews’ mother is jazz musician Salome Bey and her father was a co-founder of The Underground Railroad, the first soul food restaurant in Canada. In the 1990s, Matthews was part of the band Blaxäm, which for Brewster “represented the texture of Toronto.” - AGO

TO DISCOVER IN CV117 | Toronto artist Sandra Brewster, who claims the right to opacity – a concept dear to the thinker of creolization Édouard Glissant – rethinks Blackness, situating it somewhere “between visibility and invisibility.” This is the conclusion drawn by Érika Nimis in her review of this finely tuned show focused on the deconstruction and representation of racialized people.

This is one of @sabrewst ‘s infamous Blurs.

For part of my dissertation I focused on this series and her heirloom installation from her Master’s thesis: A trace, evidence of time past. My conversations with Sandra really pushed me think think of art beyond a political sense. Thinking about her work in relation to other texts like Kevin Quashie’s The Sovereignty of Quiet really helped ground my approach to understanding Black art, *as is*. Really thankful for their nudge/reminder to acknowledge the everydayness of Black (Canadian) life which can often get lost, under acknowledged, or completely overlooked in the academy.

Pree this + more of her work in Fragments of Epic Memory on now at the AGO.
