Joined @bbcnews this evening to chat about the incoming retaliatory tariffs coming into effect tomorrow and what Canada ultimately needs to get back to the trading table with the United States. by @sabrinagrover
Joined Tim Powers and Tom Mulcair yesterday on The Vassy Kapelos Show to chat... you guessed it, trade! It's been clear from the Prime Minister and the senior trade team that the deal we had on Wednesday and Thursday, wasn't the deal we had on Friday - and that ultimately unravelled the negotiations. Today, the announcement of counter measures and business supports is part of the picture that keeps our economy competitive amidst that backdrop of tariff chaos, and provides at least some certainty for businesses. The Prime Minister has the grace and groundswell of Canadian support because we're negotiating not just in good faith, but with no intention of taking a bad deal. The next questions we face is how long will the pain last? How long until we get back to the negotiation table? And is there a domestic shift in the United States that brings about a better deal. by @sabrinagrover

A couple of weeks ago on the heels of the electoral list data breach, I spoke about the political risks for Premier Smith and the UCP. My take: the biggest risk is Smith being perceived as the de facto leader of the separatist movement. Rath, Parker, and Sylvester (famously paranoid of the King) are all middling, kooky personalities in Alberta politics. They have a strong following among the 10% of hardline separatists, but beyond that they're seen as pretty fringe, even within the Alberta context. Smith, however, is a real leader with real power. Her actions over the last 18 months, and more importantly the last three weeks, have more and more cemented her as a key defender of the movement and we're now just steps away from her being seen as leading it outright. The weaponization of the 700,000 number as people being "disenfranchised" without a referendum is also disingenuous. The 400,000 people who signed Forever Canada weren't looking for a referendum fight, they wanted to affirm their position that Alberta and Canada stay as they are. Period. Full stop. Tonight's address and the final reveal (cue the game show music) of the actual question on the ballot tells us that Smith is trying to balance two plates at once, and hardly has separated herself from the separatist lens. There's a lot in play. On one hand, Danielle Smith is trying to sell Alberta to the world and to the rest of Canada, promoting our position as an energy superpower. On the other, she is actively creating the conditions, ignoring court orders, lowering the signatory threshold for citizen referendums, that would ultimately destroy the country she claims to want to stay in. She also has a caucus problem. Some members are upset she's too close to Carney via the MOU. Others are upset that Alberta has made room for the separation conversation at all. by @sabrinagrover

The big headline last week (albeit before the Iran attack on Saturday, which probably will change this whole outlook soon) was that Canada's real GDP contracted unexpectedly in Q4. But it's important to look beyond those headlines. ➡️ Much of this contraction is attributed to falling inventories. ➡️ Real GDP was up 0.2% in December 2025 with a rebound in manufacturing. ➡️ Housing prices are showing an almost 5% price decline year over year. ➡️ In 2025 wages were up in almost every sector except retail and wholesale. I am not an economist so here is the political take -- does this government have an economy problem? Not yet. Canadians continue to show confidence in Mark Carney, approval for Carney is 66% nationwide, including a remarkable 57% in Alberta. Even among those who believe that affordability and the economy are a top issue, the Liberals have a slight edge. The Liberals will need to show progress on the affordability file, but most Canadians tie this at least somewhat to trade and Donald Trump. So what do we need to see? Sectoral growth tied to recent trade deals, and a convincing narrative that expanded trade horizons are working. On affordability I believe Provinces actually need to show some progress. Take Calgary/Alberta for example - the biggest hit to affordability to Albertans in recent days was a fallout of the provincial budget... property taxes up and benefits, like those for seniors and AISH recipients down. by @sabrinagrover
