It is with great delight that I invite you to Our Tactics Were Simple at Vox Populi on October 23rd!

It’s been a dream to be in a new performance work/process/ensemble with Frank, Mitchell, Rose & James. We’re toying with togetherness & the posibilities for group dynamics to erode, remold, & recast us. It’s emergent and I couldn’t be more thrilled ❤️‍🔥

Project description:
What does it mean to be a good person in America under this regime? Through play, provocation, and an alarming number of wigs, Alyse James and Sacha Vega offer cultural criticism with humor, heart, and an ongoing question: Can a person, or people, actually apologize their way into becoming good? Can you put a price on repair?

Working across absurdist clowning, video, writing, and installation, the artists created a Marvel-esque cast of W(hite)omen Characters, who have joined forces to save the country, no, the world via workout videos promising eternal youth, an apology subscription service promising a cure to racism, and a series of other well-intentioned, but failed attempts at atonement for their wrong-doings.

Their project chronicles the grotesque and delightful machinery of morality culture: the performance of betterment, the anxiety of being ethical enough, and the contortions we make when righteousness lacks a singular, easy shape. The video exhibition will be on view at Icebox Project Space October 8–November 15, alongside a series of performances.

Rose and Sacha are hungry gals singing for their supper at Fat Moon Restaurant and Karaoke. Equipped with microphones, props, and questionable boundaries, they’ll spend one hour attempting to earn enough tips to buy themselves dinner. Expect songs, dances, monologues, crowd work, and other acts of public ambition or public humiliation.

Part karaoke night, part variety show, part performance experiment, the evening draws inspiration from guerrilla art, porous boundaries between audience and performer, and the belief that everyday is a spectacle. Admission is a drink or food item. The value of their work is up to you. Drop in, drop out, stay for one Alanis, maybe bounce when the Boss comes on!!

PERFORMANCES:

Mouth Noise (Nina Sarnelle) is a container for sounds coming up from the gut. It’s a solo performance made of live music and projected video by an artist with severe chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease. Mouth Noise offers inflamed and intimate attempts to digest white supremacy, techno-colonialism, ecological collapse, and the brutality of the US immigration system. @ninasarnelle

The Odds is a hybrid dance-performance by Julia Gladstone and Sacha Vega with live sound by James Gentile. The Odds ricochets between parody and exposure, playing a field where American privilege, chance, control, and humiliation emerge and shapeshift in the performers’ bodies. Inspired by Avgi Saketopoulou’s Sexuality Beyond Consent, Édouard Glissant’s Poetics of Relation, and the deadpan absurdity of Nathan Fielder, the piece turns performance into a game of unstable signals, shifting advantages, and speculative strategies. @jamesgentile @sachachavega @optical_massage

Fresh Tracks “New Works” Artist Spotlight: Sacha Vega ✨

How did we learn to perform power? In “SWELL,” multidisciplinary choreographer Sacha Vega and surreal comedic performer Rose Luardo take on the slippery logic of power through a shared hallucinatory solo. Together, Vega and Luardo devise an experimental dance that slips between satire and sincerity, hustling through impressions of American™ ambition, humiliation, and autonomy, all channeled through the body of a woman enigmatically unmoored by linear time. From their process trickles up a disruptive, humorous piece, layering physical comedy, 80s grandeur, nicotine nostalgia, and overinflated ideologies.
