Dive boat goals. This is the research dive platform used by Parks Canada for their survey and artifact recovery on the wreck of HMS Erebus off the coast of Nunavut. Now if anyone’s got a spare barge we can borrow this summer... 📷: @parks.canada by @saci_org

Required reading: a seminal work by a man who served with Cortés himself during the Mexican campaign, and was present for the scuttling of the ships we’re looking for. by @saci_org

On the slopes high above our search area for the @lostshipsofcortes is the ancient Totonac settlement of Quiahuitzlán, with its ball court, grave sites and dramatic views over the sea. Imagine the sight, 500 years ago, of a fleet of sailing ships on the horizon. Who could have known how it would change the world? taken in Quiahuitzlán, Tlaxcala, Mexico by @saci_org

Since our work is largely done underwater, our diving equipment is extremely important, for our safety and so we can focus on the job at hand and not worry about our kit. So we’re grateful for sponsors and partners like @aquadive diving watches and @halcyondivesystems for rugged, efficient gear we can rely on. by @saci_org

Although we never considered our search for the @lostshipsofcortes a treasure hunt, this is an intriguing bit of news from our friends at @inahmx . According to @mexiconewsdaily “A scientific analysis of a gold ingot found beneath a Mexico City street almost 40 years ago has confirmed that it was part of the Spanish plunder with which conquistadores led by Hernán Cortés attempted to escape the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlán in 1520.” by @saci_org

“Burn the boats” has become a common catchphrase signifying an “all of nothing” level of commitment. But many historians now believe that Hernán Cortés did not actually order his men to torch the fleet in order to prevent a mutiny or temptation to retreat, but simply scuttle them offshore. Whatever the case, the fate of those lost ships remains part of the mystery we intend to solve when we return to Mexico for this summer’s expedition. by @saci_org

Have you wondered about all the silt? Once we identify an anomaly with the magnetometer and metal detector, we then use hand held probes to locate buried items in the seabed. Finally, a high pressure water jet is the quickest way to excavate the sand and clay. 📷: @jonathankingston by @saci_org
