February 16, 1853, it’s the height of the Gold Rush Era and the Steamship Independence was transporting over 400 passengers and crew from San Juan del Sur Nicaragua to San Francisco. At 5:15am Captain Sampson rammed the ship into some rocks off Punta Tosca the southern tip of the island. Apparently he confused the rocks with whales which migrate to Bahia Magdalena every winter.
In an attempt to save his ship/passengers & crew, Captain Sampson tried beaching the vessel on Isla Margarita, in the process he struck more rocks, the boilers exploded engulfing the ship in flames. Over 130 passengers & crew were killed including women & children. The survivors that made it to shore suffered tremendous hardship till they were rescued 3 days later. Had it not been for the heroic efforts of a brave crewman, many more would have perished (you’ll recognize his name next week).
The SS Independence has been lost in time, many have searched for this cultural treasure without luck. Last year we were unable to find her. At the end of this month I will join SAS-INAH and an international team of archeologist and explorers armed with new intelligence... we are going to locate the remains of this treasured Ship, and help establish a small museum on the island to commemorate the regions nautical heritage. Our team expects cold water, strong currents, limited visibility and an abundance of marine life (just don’t tell my mom).

Tremendous opportunity to lead an expedition back to Isla Margarita in search of the SS Independence this November. Looking forward to finding this historic wreck and making an impact on our host fishing village Alcatraz. I will provide more background as the date approaches.

30 years ago Manuel Polanco lead my team of explorers to a galleon he called “El Ingles”. Since then I have never been able to relocate her till his son Benito lead me back. In recognition to his dedication to his many decades of marine exploration INAH has renamed the wreck site “Manuel Polanco”. A tremendous tribute to a great explorer. A special thanks to Roberto Junco and Laura Carrillo INAHs sub aquatic division for making this tribute possible.@chorell1519 @underwaterarchaeology @meldamhor

Thats it – an anchor! ⚓️ We are thrilled to report the findings that this summer’s @lostshipsofcortes expedition supported by Aquadive uncovered not one, but *two* 16th century anchors off the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, leading the team to believe they may have positively identified the final resting place to Spanish Conquistador Hernan Cortes’ lost fleet. In a real highlight of 2019, I joined @aquadive and the @lostshipsofcortes project in Mexico to hunt for clues as to the whereabouts of the famous conquistador’s scuttled fleet. Well, I’m proud to say I’ve joined the project as a partner with @saci_org and excited to announce the discovery of TWO additional 16th century anchors in the same vicinity as the one found in 2018! This is one of the most important archaeological hunts in history. Be sure to follow @saci_org and @lostshipsofcortes and read the full press release on the SACI website. 📷: @jonathankingston / SACI
